  • New car for Christmas

So the car Amber has been driving is a Plymouth that was purchased for $250 and was only intended to be blown up in an upcoming movie Zombie Vice Squad. As such, the car she's been driving has something of a finite existance adn I needed to find her something new.

Well, I planned on buying her a car for Christmas and I missed the one I really wanted to get her, a 1965 Mercury Monterey with the Breezeway window in the back. A friend in Texas, Gary, was watching Craigslist for me and told me that there was one for sale in Lakewood for $500 so I jumped in the shower (trust me, I HAD to shower, it had been a while and you just can't finess a car purchase when you smell like ass warmed over) and ran out the door. I missed it by 20 FUCKING MINUTES! FUCK!

So I bought other stuff for Christmas and we went up to my parents in Pueblo. Well, about half an hour after I get to Pueblo Gary informs me the car is BACK ON CRAIGSLIST! The buyer fell through! At this point I am 170 miles away and can't go see the car (when he said "car's been sold" I assumed, you know, SOLD as in I got me the money and the car drove away, not a guy promised to pay me and the car is sitting in my back yard still)

Sooooo, Chris and Audra went by for me on Christmas eve and confirmed it WAS a breezeway and Christmas morning Gary wired them the money (we were nowhere near civilization to do it)

At any rate, last night we drove by and took a few snapshots. Bear in mind I didn't even see the car until last night, I went off of what Chris told me about it and figured what the hell.

The best part? It cost $350. Some light body work but all in all solid and it runs. Now to dig it out...

A breezeway window is a retractable power rear window. This only applies to non-station wagon set-ups. It was first introduced on the 57 Mercury turnpike cruiser. 1963 to 1967 full size Mercurys used this type of window, however the 67-68 models only lowered two inches...and the the prior went fully down. 56 Sunliners had something called a Breezeway window but all it really was, was a zip out plastic rear window. However, what Zac just got is a very cool looking and interesting window and its a shame more cars didn't have it. Here is an example:

Sweet.....that seems like a killer option. But also a horrible area for rust to build up.

Luckily the car is rust free. All I know is that FOREVER I have seen these around and it's always been one of the very few old cars that, aside from a hearse, I'd want parked in the driveway. It's just so radically different that I really dig it.

We've been on this car quest for Amber for a while and I just wanted something cool for her that she would like AND that wouldn't be a death trap. Air bags and crumple zones my ass. Rock beats scissors and Detroit rolling iron beats new cars and most commercial grade locomotives.

So heres a lil sidestory about a 1965 Monterey, That a very good friend once told me, seems when he was a teenager, back in the 60's during the Detroit Riots, a car load of Bros were tear-assing down Plum street in a 65 Monterey, with the National Guard hot on their tail, The Bros dropped the window and let out a shotgun blast, The national guard in turn let loose with the 50 cal and the bros, Mercury and all went careening into a building............. They never show you THAT STUFF on the HISTORY CHANNEL
