  • Big Car Show Accident in Tennessee

SELMER, Tenn. (AP) — Four people died and up to 15 were injured after a drag racing vehicle at a car show lost control and drove into a large crowd of bystanders on Saturday, according to a state highway patrol official.
Tennessee Highway Patrol spokesman Mike Browning said authorities are trying to determine what caused the vehicle to careen into the crowd at the Cars for Kids charity event in Selmer, located about 80 miles east of Memphis.

Browning did not know how many people had been brought to area hospitals to be treated for their injuries.

He said the vehicle has been described as a drag racing car, but he did not have more details yet about the vehicle.

Scott Henley, of Selmer, witnessed the accident and said the vehicle started burning off its tires, then began to fishtail and careened into a light pole before spinning around into the audience.

Selmer Police Chief Neal Burks said, ‘‘bodies were flying into the air when it happened.’’

Cars for Kids holds several events throughout the nation and raises close to $200,000 per year for charities that help children in need, according to the charity’s Web site.

About 40,000 to 60,000 people were expected to attend the weekend event in Selmer.

That's less than ten miles north of where I work. I actually work with several people from Selmer. I didn't realize Cars for Kids was going to be such a huge event... man I miss out on everything.

I'm sure all the religious freaks out there are going to blame this tragedy on the early release of Mary Winkler, the preacher's wife who shot her husband in the back with a shotgun. She was given a very, very light sentence, and is expected to serve less than a year, most of which she completed before the trial.

    *sighs*

The video of the scene (which I havent found online yet) makes it look like it happened in or next to a Sonic drive in lot. It also looks like a funnycar. I guess he just got loose and flew out of control.

      *Edit*
this the car that did the damage, note the covered body in front of it. Apparently it was during a parade.

What a fucking idiot. There is a reason for the wall at the dragstrip seperating a drag car from the grandstands. A car like that deserves more respect, If he insist on driving like a 16 year old put him in a 5.0 or Camaro and leave the race cars for the adults. This kind of shit gets cops in a ticket frenzy when you heat a little rubber or play a little at a cruze, show or parade.

From another article, "Selmer Police Chief Neal Burks said the driver survived the crash and was being questioned by the Tennessee Highway Patrol. He said no charges had been filed Saturday night. Burks said the accident happened at 6 p.m."

I think I'll file the glass jar incident under "too much information"

It's back down to 6 now. Everyone that died was 22 or under. Two of the girls had the same last name and were four years apart. Sisters?

It is Tennessee, they could have been mother and daughter.

I can not believe that no charges are being filed. Makes me think maybe something went wrong with the car, and it wasn't the driver. i.e. line locks went out etc.

Man, I'm sure this is going to effect our ability to do burnouts at the parade this year...
