I'm allowed to look at message boards on my break. It's the quality of the stuff I look at that is monitored.
In the same breath that says it would be easy to not look at the message board during work hours, it would also be incredibly easy to use the "not work safe" forum. Have some respect for the rest of us.

My experience has been that every IT department will store your outbounds. They don't surf them all...no one would have time, but if they want to get rid of your black ass, they start going through them and seeing what you've been doing at work. Can they REALLY prove that it was you who did it, though? It's defensible. Otherwise, companies rely on the "over the shoulder" method, unless a manager will have a productivity problem and monitor within his people's IP range. There are also keyword/usage triggers, and programs that look for certain sites or content. In ten years, I never got into trouble for that, but I was always using NAT and changing my virtual IP often. I went through a secured wireless router and named it "compassbank1" because there was a Compass bank next door. My router was never plugged into my office jack, always in the server room or a nearby departments'.
Nobody suspected a thing until we were about to move out of the building and I told some friends. Management never found out, and that wasn't why they got rid of me. I admit that I had a productivity problem, but it was health-related. I admitted to it and I tried to get them to deal with it honestly, but they had to get rid of me using an FMLA trick that they've pulled on other employees now. They will offer you half-time hourly until you feel better, just like real sweethearts, "You're valuable to us and we want you to be able to come back", and you don't know that you've been on full salary and they've been sucking your FMLA dry half a day at a time until you run out of it and...hey guess what, your job has ended. This is serious stuff...they did it to me, and they're doing it to others. I still stay in touch with certain people through AIM. The only satisfaction I get is that I've been around long enough to know that they're going tits up. They've been sold twice in one year.
