friggen geico says they cant insure it. they referred me to their weird car dept and says itll prolly be insured as a commercial vehicle even though it wont be used as one.

anyone got any suggestions for companies to use?

I use State Farm, they insure mine as non-commercial. They state if I make money with it, then it will need commercial insurance.

Yeah. Geico won't insure it. I used progressive, and here is something funny. DON"T tell them it is a hearse. I didn't with my 72 M&M, and a few weeks later i backed into a brand new nissan, and totalled the front end of the car,( mine didn't even have a scratch), poor korean woman was flipping out because of MY car. And they NEVER said anything about it. Either that, or find some small place that goes through farmers, or AIG or even state farm.

Most won't insure it because VIN's with a Z or a Q in it indicate Commercial Chassis. All 3 of my vehicles are commercial & none are insured as commercial as long as no is made on them, so of course, I only except cash to solve that problem. - LOL

Yeah, their phrase for it is " Ummm....sir this car states that it has a "modified VIN number".........I just told her..." YOU CAN'T PROVE ANYTHING!!!!!" and hung up.lol.

Hagerty insurance insures my 69 for about $200.00 a year. It's considered a classic.

Yeah mine used to be $110.00 but it went up a little. Not even sure how much but I know it's not over $200.00. Maybe $150.00 have to dig out the policy. It's the best way to go as far as I'm concerned.

I've looked into the classic/antique insurance (with the low payment). Unless I am mistaken, I believe that you really shouldn't drive your vehicle around everyday. That kind of insurance is meant for vehicles you would take from your house (or wherever it's stored) to a show. So, they're not likely to cover you if you're out to get groceries.

Now, I have USAA, it's been fine with me. I've read from many hearse owners that they use State Farm. I'm going to paste a quote from Zach's site: ( I would go with full coverage.)

It is very simple to protect your investment. State Farm insurance company offers a policy called "Comprehensive coverage, including glass." This is available for usually under $150 every six months. Figure that most glass panes run over $150 and most paint jobs start out at $300 and you can see why this is important.

The coverage itself covers ALL forms of vandalism and even at the approximate $150 price is available with a $0 deductible. Be sure to get it with a $0 deductible because it makes no sense to have a $300 deductible if only one piece of glass is broken or the damage is minor and the cost for the $0 deductible is only a few bucks more, so why not? Best yet is the fact that it is available through State Farm even if you do not insure your vehicle with them.

To contact State Farm nationally you can call them at 888-702-2307 to find an agent near you.

I'm surprised that GIECO did not put you onto their Specialty Car department(although this may be where you went). They have a department for handling cars that do not fit into other catagories.

As an example, I insure a 1993 Trans Am with their SC department, because it was one of only 500 produced with a few special options.(I won't list them on a hearse forum unless someone asks me to).

What is comes down to with my policy is I agree that it is not a daily driver, and they allot a set amount of miles that I can drive the car in a year and still be insured. I do know that it varies from car to car, but mine is fairly generous. The reason that I went that way, is that if I do not, then it will be insured as a regular Trans Am, and if lost, I would not receive true replacement value. I had to drive 70 miles to a district office to speak with a regional agent and prove the cars rarity, so anything that GIECO does not surprise me.

I only insure my Trans Am with them. The rest are insured by Cotton States, which, sadly, will not insure my hearse when I purchase it.

I have used Geico for years and they've always covered every hearse I've had with no problem.

But then I only have the bare minimum liability, maybe that's why.
