  • I got 2 tickets

I was up in Springfield, IL for some route 66 cruise and show. While i was heading to the show in my 72 Superior, a cop going the other direction busted a Uturn in the middle of the road, cutting off another car, and pulled me over. 2 cops approached my wife and I from both sides of the car. They wanted to know where our seatbelts were. We showed them that we had our lap belts on, and he said we didn't fasten them right because the shoulder harness was detached (The belts were often 2 piece until 74). I was told that it was an OPTION and not required for the shoulder piece as long as the lap belt was worn because it's called primary restraint.

    Anyone ever run into this?

I'm fucking pissed because I spend so much fucking money on this trip, in the car show, and in thier restaraunts and gas stations. THEN, they slap me with $110 for 2 seatbelt tickets (one for me, one for my wife). I already told the car show organizers that are very politically tied that this is bullshit and that they need to tell their pigs to quit profiling show cars like that. I could understand it if i was being ignorant and cutting people off, or speeding, or lighting my tires. I was doing NOTHING wrong.

There's so much more I could say because I'm so pissed off about this, but this adequately describes my current mood.

I ran into that same issue with the 59. Funny thing is I had asked some of the "in the know" people in the CLC about it, and they said that seatbelts weren't factory eqipment in 59, and that they wern't even an option untill 1962. I had this paper work printed off and in my car at the time I got pulled over, so I smugly put it to the pig like this......

" here's some proof, if you think you can pull some factory paperwork evidence out of your ass, then I will sit here and allow you to keep wasting my time, otherwise, dissappear. I am not paying you to make an ass out of yourself."
Every now and tyhen I pull into quicktrip and see him sitting there in his car. When I pull up, he always leaves. Hmmmm. Wonder why he is so skiddish......

I would go to court and plead my case. The worst that could happen is the fine remains. At least it is not a moving violation. No points or insurance increases.

Arizona has a law saying that if your car is equipped with shoulder belts, you must wear them. So I took them off.

Yeah, let us know what happens because I rarely wear my shoulder strap in the 76. It barely does more than resemble a seatbelt and has zero give to it. If I were, heaven forbid, to be hit that shoulder belt would more likely just cut my shoulder off than actually help me.

Since I have a 3-way, I've always worried about being cut in half if the rear door came open, which is why I took the should belts the off. If I ever get pulled over, I'll show the judge a picture of the coach with both doors open and tell him that they didn't have shoulder belts because the top is fiberglas and there wasn't any place to put them. I've already upholstered over the moun holes.

I see what you said here. My question is... mine is a 75 and has the 2 piece detachable seatbelts as well. So is mine special or were they on the 75 too?

Btw, I am very sorry that some asshole had to add a couple of tickets to your trip. That just sucks.

humm the 68 has them 70 does not 75,76,78 does

if you have them use them thats a big windshield to fly through

and the reason that they started putting them in the rear seats of all cars in a crash you got a good chance of splitting your spleen into .. and then you get to ride in the back of a hearse ....

I had surgery on my neck, the whole thing fused together into one piece of bone, and when I had my collision in the truck with the shoulder belt on, it used my neck as a fulcrum to pull my shoulder apart. I had neck pain before, but never left shoulder pain until that collision. Then an office chair in my hearse clocked me in the head and right shoulder, so I have pain in my neck and both shoulders now. I got a note from my doctor excusing me from wearing shoulder belts, but it's expired now. I have to remember to get a new one. All of my cars, even the 2004, have been modified to have lap belts only, or lap and shoulder belts, driver's choice. It would be nice if the government would let us make our own safety decisions to fit our own situations, just as I let the people who drive my cars do.

I was told if it came from the factory with seatbelts you must have them.. so it all depends on the year and make of your car.

This is the law here as well.
