This is the email I got from them today:
Sir,
As requested in your e-mail you would like a quotation to rebuild your hood
hinges.
The cost to rebuild a pair of 1971-4 Cadillac hood hinges is $249.00 for
the pair plus S&H back to your zip.
Presently, our turn around time is approx 3-4 weeks.
We also have 1971-4 Cadillac hood hinges in stock already rebuilt that you
could purchase outright.
The core charge is an extra $200.00.This $200.00 will be refunded as soon as
we received your old hinges.
The hinges we have in stock are complete with springs in bare metal.

Hood Hinges
Man, as white trash as this sounds I pulled the springs off of mine on the 67. I got a quote for like 300 bucks for a pair of used ones once. So I pulled the springs and hood sits fine in the back. I just have to carry a prop-rod and of course the hood is heavy to open now. I just couldnt justify the cost of the hinges, its that bastard part of me that knows it only take 15 dollars worth of shit to fix them.
I do kind of wonder (and have been tempted to try) pulling the hinges off, heating the rivets with a torch and using a hammer and anvil to "tighten" them by compressing them a bit. Might be worth a shot.
Alex!

I just repaired mine myself. First, I drilled them apart and straightened the bent metal. I don't have a forge, so I had to cold work the parts with an anvil.
It's the shop head end of the rivets that work loose and wear the metal down, so when I put the rivets back in, I welded them to the base metal all of the way around. The shop head no longer rotates with relation to the base metal, so you have to make sure that there aren't any points where it has to, because you'll have to drill those oversize and put in bigger rivets, or use a nut and bolt and weld them together. Watch how they have to move because you may have to grind some off of the bolt or nut, or even grind them off completely and just weld.
For what these people charge to do one or two sets, you could probably buy everything you needed to go into the hood hinge repair business, and do a dozen a day. Sheeeeeeeit.

Hood hinge rebuild
I know a guy who rebuilds hood hinges much cheaper than SMS auto does. Go to HOODHINGEREPAIR.COM and contact WILLIE. He drills out the old rivets and makes custom oversize rivets for the holes after he resizes the holes and makes them round again where they might be oval shaped from wear. He`s not a big company just a couple guys. And he would only have your hinges for about a week . Small shop ,small workforce means low overhead so he won`t charge as much as SMS. I would say 50% less. You can tell him Kevin in missouri sent you.
