  • OT Firearms Question

Since many here seem to be actively into firearms, I was wondering if anyone has had any experience (good or bad) with Hi-Point? I have been considering a 9mm carbine just for plinking and ... well, just because. I have read good and bad (90% good though) about the Model 995

Made in USA, lifetime warranty, seems like a good price, what's not to love?

    Any thoughts?

    TIA

Something like that though isn't a Weatherby - it's meant to be shot. Did it just feel cheap?

i highly recomend the hi point. Ive had pne for years and love it. Yeah its cheap looking but ive tortured mine and their customer service is the best ive seen in a long time. Ive had to use the warrenty a couple of times and was shocked by how much they stand by their products.

          Thanks for the replies.
          Well, there are a few reasons that I didn't care for the gun;
          1) It didn't fit me. I am very tall, the gun is small and the stock seems short and uncomfortable.
          2) Yes, it is "cheap" (but I can't say that it seemed to be "junk")
          3) The dealer (whom I trust) tells me that they are a PITA to disassemble and clean.

I think I am gonna wait for a few weeks and throw in some extra $$$ for a Beretta Cx4 Storm 9mm. It has stackable butt spacers that can be added to lengthen the stock, and feels like a much superior quality piece. He demonstrated ease of field disassembly for me, which was a big plus. Of course, it costs 3X the $$$, but I'm sure I would be happy with it. It uses the same mag as the Series 92 (and others).

they do have aftermarket stocks for the 995

that one is basically the berreta storm

they are a PITA to fully strip to detail clean but in all reality ive only had to strip mine once to clean some debris out from me dropping it in the sand, normal cleaning with a bore snake and some break-free and rem oil is more than suffincent.

the berettas are definatly id say a better quality and they can use the same mags as the pistol which is a plus. but the lifetime warrenty on the hi point is literally the best for anything ive ever owned

heres my experiances with the warrenty dept

forgot to tighten the front sight set screw and it fel off at the range and i didnt notice until i got home. i called them up and told them that and they said it was covered. asked for name and address and they sent both the front and rear sights free of charge. they didnt ask for any proof of where i got the gun or serial number or anything. no static from them at all.

second time was the firing pin broke. personally i feel it broke from me feeding about 500 rounds in a span of 2 hours through it but regardless it broke. once again a 4 minute phone call and 2 days later i had a new pin in hand.

3rd time the stock was starting break at the rear of the receiver. the stock is hollow and kinda flimsy ill give ya that and they are hard adjusting to ( im 6'1" and have to hold it weird to line up on it) but anyways another phone call which in this one they asked how old mine was and then said " we have an improved trigger for these and im gonna send you one". so 3 or 4 days later i got a brand new stock and screws for it and a new trigger assembly.

like i said the berretta is definaly a higher quality and looks a lil nicer but the price and warrenty on the hi point are worth the ugly factor to me.

and they are also pretty accurate if you have the patience to bench em in.
ive got mine sighted in at 75 yards and can get 1/4"to 1/2" groups pretty consistant with the factorry stock and open sights. with that other kind of stock and a scope id venture to say itd make a decent small game gun

Hmmmm ... now this is all good stuff. Thanks for taking the time for such a detailed reply. The range has a 995 that they rent out ... may have to give it a try and some more consideration. Could probably deck one out with lots of goodies for the price of a stripped-down Storm.

              Thanks again.

if you do get one stay away from the aftermarket hi cap mags. They suck and fall out and jam a lot

Because of my injuries, I can't put any firearm on my shoulder, but I am accurate with an AK47, fired just like a rifle but with the butt forward an inch or two and not touching me. I'm considering just cutting the stock off. Or I can group pretty well just firing from the waist, at shorter distances.

Tony and I went out and fired a few hundred rounds. I was mostly chasing a 7-UP bottle around the yard, and he was ready to go home long before I was, because his shoulder hurt. I asked him why he felt the need to put it on his shoulder.

Show me anything else that I can cut the stock off of and I'll consider it...if it only has four parts like the Kalashnikov. I don't like a bunch of parts. The only auto pistol I use is the P95 Ruger, which is just about as simple.

My guns don't jam because I keep them clean, but Tony doesn't, so his AK stovepipes one out the side sometimes. The thing is, all you have to do to clear it is to pull the bolt. He told me that the M16 they issued him in the army was a pain in the ass to clear.
