Tucson Police once asked me what I thought I was doing carrying a gun around in my house.

Umm...excuse me? Last time I checked, I had the right not only to carry them in my house, but on my belt in plain sight, or, with my permit, concealed, anywhere in Arizona, except in a few prohibited places.

Not only do we have crack dealers in our neighborhood, but I am surrounded on all sides by Dobermans and Rottweilers, two of which have already tried to come into my house.

I don't fear the dogs so much as the police, though. Both can be the result of bad breeding and training.

One of my customers has 2 of the Mike Vick dogs and helps out the pit bull community probably more than any single other person (Adam aside):

They've got a huge movie premiere coming out next month in Vegas called 'VICKtory to the Underdog' - if you like pitbulls this movie is worth getting.

Oh god dammit that hurts me, Chris. That's the time of year that I ALWAYS used to take a trip to Vegas. I could probably hang, but I would have to lock Jennifer in her room. The last time I went away, all of the hide-a-beds were folded out, and I found a used condom wrapper in the trash. I don't know what the fuck went on, but you can bet that I searched through her videotapes trying to find out.

I worked at a kennel for six years, so I have a little experience with dogs and cats. I have been around dogs and cats all my life and don't know if I could live without them. I love Rottweilers, but they are very protective dogs. I believe the best dogs are mixed, they have less health problems are generally smarter. The meanest dogs are the smaller ones. I know of a Coker Spaniel that put both of his owners in the hospital. My brother had a Pit Bull, that was not mean at all, but was dumb as can be. We have a Rat Terrier that jumped on the Pit and she bite back to defend herself. When a Pit bull bite, they bite and hold they don't repeatedly bite, they are trained for that.

I think that "trained" might not be the right word. "Bred" might be more suitable, since every dog is trained differently (except in the "sled dog" system, which mimics humanity).

My understanding is that Pit Bulls were originally bred to fight each other to the death in dog-fighting arenas called "pits". If I'm wrong, someone please tell me the real history behind the breed name.

I agree with you 100% about mixed-breed dogs being the best. Purebred = inbred, and all of the birth defects and health problems that come with it. I have always had dogs, and have watched my sister spend thousands of dollars at the vet when her purebred Shepherds and Travernes got sick, while I paid for an exam and a rabies shot every three years. I did the distemper trio vaccine myself....on the dogs, of course.

For a while, I had to inject myself in the ass with a 21-ga. needle once a week (that's one bigassed needle). Tony watched me do it one time and nearly fainted.

I agree with the media giving the pit bull such a bad rap. One of the most aggressive dogs is a poodle. How news worthy is a Poodle attack? All dogs can be aggresive. I have little patience for dogs and aggresion towards me or my family. I still have puncture scars on my arms where I was attacked pretty bad by a dog when I was about 10 or so, it was a hound dog that had gotten into our fenced in backyard where I was playing.

Notice none of my dog encouters are Pits.

Suzy had a Lhasa apsa when she moved in. The dog was a big ball of white hair and he had an attitude. I still remember the little bastard bit the shit out of me, taking a chunk out of my leg when I went to the fridge and walked by his food dish. I punted that fuck through a wall, he left me alone after that.

I also had my sisters Rottweiler for a while because she moved into an apartment. The dog was very sweet, well taken care of and was raised around small dogs. I had her for 6 months and she got along great with my dogs (they all lived in the back yard together), when one day I was in the back yard with someone showing them a car when she came running by me and grabbed the dashound by my leg by the throat and started shaking her. It was completely unprovoked, the dog just snapped. It was all I could do to get her off my dog. I couldn't pry her mouth open, I had to beat her half unconcious with a tree limb and a pry bar before she let go. The dashound lived but cost me a fortune in vet bills. I gave the dog away the following week and told my sister it got hit by a car.

My parents neighbor has an Alaskan Malamute. That is the meanest dog I have ever seen. My 2 year old son and me were in my dads front yard one day when it it jumped the fence and ran straight for him. I was able to get between them and it started to growl at me. I was yelled for my dad to get over here and he proceided to beat it in the head with a shovel. That dog does not back down but neither did my dad. I am amazed he didn't kill it he hit it so hard. Another day it got out and I was helping him work on his car in the front yard and her it comes after my moms cat. I had a high powered pellet gun in my car so I grabbed that and put as many in it as I could but it didn't kill it, the dog ran off but unfortunately came back. When it did it killed my mothers 500 dollar siamiese cat. Animal control has been out several times but the dog has never been caught it always jumps back in there yard and they get another warning. It breaks its chains and is generally neglected, The owners don't care. I talked to Clayton County PD last time it went after our other other neighbor, same story call us if it gets out again. They have listed it a a dangerous animal and I "do" have permission to shoot it. I was informed I am allowed to only if I feel my life is in danger and it is on my property *hint*. But it is advisable to call and let them deal with it. I have a 9mm hydrashock round waiting on it to get out again. It's a little stronger than a pellet.

Another one was a big brown dog that came at me while I was cutting my grass at the old house. It was a big dog looked like a Rott. I tried to shoo it off but it wasn't backing down. It didn't look friendly and it started barking at me aggresivley, I didn't take any chances it got 2 or 3 22LR rounds in the gut and took off.

Being that I have two jobs that involve animals (mainly dogs and cats), I can say that I've seen all kinds of things. I definately agree about the smaller dogs usually being the most nastiest. Not that long ago I had a pomeranian lunge at me! And don't get me started on chihauhaus! But of all breeds of dogs, its the chow I trust the least. Even chow mixes I have a hard time trusting. Another dog I have a hard time trusting is the Akita. They're beautiful dogs, but most (not all mind you) of the ones I've seen were 'two faced'. Another interesting thing I've even seen some vicious 8 week old puppies. Its rare, but I have seen it. I also remember this older pitbull puppy that came in as a stray, and she was a very sweet dog. Yet whenever you brought anything near her that resembled a pole, she became very agressive. Now it is possible that she could've been beaten with one. Sadly, she never made it for adoption. I also remember another pit that was really nice and up for adoption. Yet, due to the fact that this one idiot boss' kid kept teasing this dog over and over, it eventually got agressive towards all kids.

I also agree about the mixed breeds being better for not having so much health problems. I've seen so many purebred dogs with all kinds of problems due to improper breeding. I remember one time someone surrendered some lil fluffy dog (I forget the breed) and when I looked at its pedigree papers, its showed that its parents were half brother and sister. The breed I've seen with the worst problems are cocker spaniels. Those poor things are riddled with all kinds of issues! Its all thanks to those who breed for 'quantity' and not 'quality'. English Bulldogs are another one of those breeds with bad health issues. Thats why if you really want a certain breed, you should go to a reliable breeder. Or you could always adopt from a shelter!

On a different note, has anyone ever seen a basset hound/pit bull mix? Its hilarious!

There was a Pit Bull that stayed at the kennel, he was so housebroken that he wouldn't go on the concrete and when he was walked he would back half of his body in a bush. He was fine around most dogs except two bulldogs, one was a boxer and one was an English Bulldog. He bite one of them through the chain link fence and I couldn't get him to let go. I had to hold his nose and pull at the same time to get him off.
