I just had a gun stolen, most likely by a juvenile. Please don't tell me that I shouldn't have allowed a juvenile access to it, because I didn't have access to it myself. The police left it in plain sight and threw me into the back of a car, leaving my 15-year-old girl at home, terrified. I saw that Earl, our neighbor's car was there, and he was 110% reliable, so I told her to call Earl. It was the next day that I had access to a phone, and I called. Earl was out of town on a vacation, and Jenny had called an adult I knew, and seemed somewhat trustworthy. I told her to hide the gun in my dresser drawer. I did NOT know that she was inviting over some friends that were her age, and that they would know where the gun was. What the fuck were they doing in my room? Sniffing my underwear?

I need to report the gun stolen for liability reasons, but the gun shop was sold and they don't have the records. How does one look up the owner of a gun? I have the receipts for every gun in the house, but I couldn't find that one. If someone were murdered with it, the police would come banging on my door. If I try to turn it in stolen, will the police be able to trace the S/N# then?

This gun thing is minor compared to everything else that's happened, but needs to be dealt with right away.

    Thanks for any ideas.

Gun stores are only supposed to hold those records for a few years so you may not be able to get the info ever. But who knows how it really works behind the scenes. I would definitely report it stolen just to cover your own ass, just tell them you can't find the serial number right now.
I keep a list of my guns and serial numbers in a safe place just in case something happens to one of them.

And why were you being taken away?

When you report it stolen, why not give a list of the names of the kids that were in the house with access to it that night, including your daughter? If the laws are as stringent as you make them sound, seems like they might want to interview all of them.

I agree,I'm not sure of Arizona's laws, but I'd definately report it stolen along with the kids names! Missouri just did away with what I call double registering, you had to have a background check done at the gun shop AND you had to turn around and fill out same paperwork with county PD. Now gun shop registering is sufficient. The gun is prob on a registry with your name and the local PD should be able to access this.I hope it's on the registry in your name anyway...If there were any distinct scratches or nics tell them bout those too.

What sucks is that I found the serial number for every gun but that one.

As to why I got hauled away, you would not believe it. Once you got done laughing, you would walk around thinking that there must be something else to the story.

Well, at least I got a police report, but there is no doubt now that a teenager stole the gun, which probably means that a teenager will be killed with it. Even though it was a police officer's fault, I didn't need anything else to make me feel like shit right now. I've locked up all of my guns and my ammunition, and rifle bolts, and I don't care if I never touch them again.
