  • Beware of Vista updates

Last night, I allowed my laptop to install updates and shut down. This morning, it would not boot. On the next attempt, it took about 30 minutes and was able to repair itself (AFAIK).

Tony has always told me to install all of the updates because there are so many attacks on Vista, but I think I'll review them carefully from now on.

The only good thing about Vista is that you can grab a drive from another machine, physically put it in yours and take ownership. With XP, unless you're an expert, you reformat and hope you have a backup.

Of course, we could move disks around just fine when we had ms-dos...

MS DOS used FAT 32/16 which were archaic filing systems when compared to NTFS, especially when it comes to security.

The ONLY good thing about vista is the fact that it nags everyone for everything they do, making it a pain to use. Maybe a few will switch to Linux because of it. The other good thing is my grandma can no longer screw up her computer because it won't let her. The user has now become powerless over their own system with that OS (unless they know how to disable the safeties on it).

Also importing disks in XP is easy, just use the management console (right click my computer, click "manage", go into disk management).

As far as taking ownership that has to do with file permissions, turn off simple file sharing, go into the properties of the drive, then take ownership.
