Sunday it became apparent WHO is funding the stimulus package: SMOKERS! Went to buy a carton of cigarettes and overnight they'd went up $8.40 a carton in taxes. After the shock wore off from THAT the clerk said that April 1st they are going up AGAIN! You know, i'm well aware that the bleeding heart do-gooders would love to banish cigarettes from the face of the earth, but why is tobacco always the FIRST thing taxed beyond belief? WTF!?!?!?

tax
Im in La., but its a federal thing. Bush refused to sign it when He was in office. It really hits the poorer people, especially the ones Who roll their own. At least I dont drink, but for those Who do You can believe a double whammy is coming. I looked up the bill on line, the BS is so deep I dont understand anything. $ suppose to go to some kind of childrens health care. Hell I almost got a ticket at Cruzin the Coast in Gulfport, Miss last year, cant even smoke on the beach. The new sign at the stores list it at a 158% increase, more on cigars. This is even on smokeless products, so much for 2nd hand smoke. LA. You can not smoke any where there is food. Another shot at personal rights, if I own a restaurant, I should say what goes on in there. If You dont like it thats cool, go some where else. But why cant I do what I want in MY OWN PLACE? BS

Yea it's a federal thing to deter kids from smoking & promote better general health blah blah blah... Look what coming in April!CHIPRA 2009 will increase taxes on cigarettes and tobacco-related products (effective April 1, 2009) to the following rates:
federal cigarette taxes would be increased to $1.00 and .66 cents per pack;
small cigars would have their taxes immediately increased to the same level as cigarettes: $1.0066 per pack, an increase of $.97.
(The House of Representatives passed version of January 2009 had a gradual increase of $0.25 per pack in 2009-2010, $0.50 in 2011-2012, $0.75 in 2013-2014, and $1.00 in 2015 and thereafter;
large cigars would be subject to a tax of 52.75% of sales price with a maximum of $0.4026 per cigar; [2/12/09 update]
chewing tobacco would be increased to approximately $.03 cents per ounce (and $0.50 per pound);
snuff would be increased to $.113 per can ($1.51 per pound); [2/12/09 update]
pipe tobacco would be increased to $.18 per ounce ($2.8126 per pound);
roll-your-own tobacco (RYO) would be increased to $1.53 per ounce ($24.78 per pound). The definition of roll–your-own tobacco would be expanded to include tobacco that could be used to make cigars. The large increase in roll-your-own tobacco reflects concerns that this tobacco might substitute for cigarettes;
cigarette papers taxes would rise from $1.22 per 40, to $3.13;
cigarette tubes would rise from $2.44 to $6.26.

tax
On top of all this BS, 1 of the great state of LA. congress ladies is adding a state bill to add $1.00 per pack state tax from $.39 to $1.39. I think more people HAVE quit smoking, so the tax revenues have fallen.

They're already going after "unhealthy" foods now, and soon you'll most likely be paying a big sin tax on a burger and fries. With the minimum wage increase, and the bad economy, most fast food franchises are barely making it anyway. They're already shutting down around here.
Life used to be good, but as one of those "Generation X" people, I've lived it all watching the government destroy the things that gave me pleasure, one at a time. Fortunately, I can say that tobacco and fast food are not among them anymore, but most of the things that could bring me pleasure have been made illegal, grossly immoral, or too expensive.

Pretty papers, pretty ribbons, la la la la la
Damn straight. You can't print money. All you can print is paper, and just like anything else, the more there is of it, the less it's worth.
