It's easy to forget by now, because everyone has "open container laws", but there used to be no law against rolling down the road and popping a top every now and then, as long as you didn't get carried away with it. I used to drink a beer about every 100 miles on the freeway, just to keep my neck from getting stiff. In Texas, we used to measure driving distance in "beers". How far is it to Nacogdoches? Aw, you're gonna need a 12-pack for that.
I was in Texas when they passed the OC law, one of those laws that came down from the Midwest with the U-Haul trailers in the 70's and 80's, and which no native Texan wanted. It seems that in any state with a warm climate and a laid-back atmosphere, there will eventually be an influx of people who want to change things.
