This was common practice before the turn of the 20th century. Easier and cheaper to make the body fit the coffins. And if they bought a pre-paid coffin, why did they not get one to fit him? A bigger coffin would mean a bigger vault too, adding to the expense even more.

I really don't see the problem. They only part of the body they're going to see is the top, so just toss a few inches of leg in a baggie and up the pants leg. Why should it be illegal?
