GERMAN SHEPARD dangerous dog attacks head in court
10th July 2009
A CLAMP-DOWN on Ipswich's irresponsible dog owners has seen a Booval man fined $2000 after his pet attacked a tourist.
The Ipswich Magistrates Court heard the German shepherd was being walked by a young girl in a Brassall park when it broke free and bit the tourist on the calf.
The court heard the dog had been declared dangerous and the owner had a long history of similar offences, and had not co-operated with council officers by putting up appropriate signage.
This case follows a string of other convictions to pass through the courts in recent weeks.
A Churchill couple were fined $900 plus court costs after their dog escaped and attacked a domestic cat, which later died from its injuries in a vet's surgery.
In another case a dog, being walked by his owner in One Mile, was attacked by a roaming dog, which clamped its jaws around its throat.
The dog walker had to beat the dog off with a skateboard.
The owner was fined $900 after telling the court the dog had escaped during a storm.
Finally, a Goodna woman was convicted and fined after her dog attacked a teacher's aide, who was dropping leaflets into houses along Dorricott Crescent.
The court heard the owner ignored the victim's pleas to show her injuries, and instead got into a car with her dog and drove off.
The Goodna woman was fined $1500 plus court costs.

Quiet Weldon community outraged after vicious dog attacks and kills pony

The peaceful quiet of a hot and lazy afternoon in Kelso Valley was shattered on July 10 as a pack of frenzied dogs brutally attacked and killed a defenseless miniature pony in its pen. The animals were all owned by Keith and Sandra Irons of Cottontail Lane and occurred on their property located off of Kelso Creek Road. The couple were
not at home at the time of the attack. Neighbor Terry Berry heard a ruckus from her next door property and went to investigate. She and her husband, Don were used to hearing the frequent dog fights that occurred on the Iron property, but something was tragically different on that afternoon.
As she looked over their common fence, the sight that awaited her was both shocking and sickening. Approximately 15 of Iron’s estimated 30 to 50 canines, ranging in ages from mere puppies to full grown large dogs were viciously attacking the pony as it lay on the ground trying uselessly to fend off its’ attackers.

What are the odds? A Rochester lawmaker that banned so called "dangerous" Pit Bulls, awaits verdict after his own Lab bites neighbor
July 1, 2009
SIOUX CITY -- The city councilman who led the drive to ban pit bulls in Sioux City is waiting to find out whether his Labrador retriever will be euthanized for biting a neighbor.
Councilman Aaron Rochester said Tuesday he has appealed Sioux City Animal Control's determination that his family's yellow lab is vicious after Saturday's incident, which resulted in an emergency room visit and five stitches for the injured neighbor.
Sioux City Police Capt. Pete Groetken said he held a hearing on Rochester's appeal Tuesday morning and will reach a decision by the end of the week. He can either uphold Animal Control's designation or overturn it.
The 3-year-old dog, Jake, is being held at the Animal Control shelter until the case is resolved.
At 4:45 p.m. Saturday, a man and woman who live in the neighborhood walked by the Rochesters' home in the 1300 block of 46th St. The lab was sitting on the front porch. As the couple walked by on the sidewalk, the dog ran off the porch and jumped the man, Groetken said..
The neighbor suffered a scratch to his right leg as he tried to push the dog away, some marks on his chest and bites to his thumb that required five stitches at a hospital emergency room. Groetken declined to identify the man because the case remains under investigation.

Parents call for tougher fines, want accused dog destroyed
The parents of a four-year-old Airdrie boy bitten by a dog are calling for tougher penalties against the owners of pets that attack people and say the low fines associated with such attacks are unacceptable.
Matt and Melissa McCann are now considering civil action against the owner of the dog to recoup costs associated with the traumatic injury to their son, who they say nearly lost the use of his arm due to the attack.
The McCann’s say their son Keegan was outside their Luxstone condo June 28 with his uncle when he was attacked in a neighbour’s yard by a large dog.
They say the owner of the dog had invited Keegan over to pet the animal and reassured them the dog wouldn’t bite.
But when Keegan went over, the dog grabbed onto his right arm and began biting, Matt said, claiming it was an unprovoked attack.
“My wife ran outside, only to be met with my son yelling and bleeding uncontrollably,” Matt said.
As the couple waited for the paramedics to arrive, they surveyed the damage done to a three-inch area of Keegan’s forearm.
“A chunk of flesh was missing from his arm,” Matt said. “Not cut, not scraped, but missing. It was deeper than the bone in his arm.”
Keegan was rushed to the Children’s Hospital in Calgary where he underwent three surgeries and a skin graft to repair the damage.
“It just missed his artery and nerves,” Melissa said. “The doctor said it was ridiculously close.”
