It's pure conditioning from childhood. You're SUPPOSED to stand and blah blah.

Personally, I don't get why you were so heated up about it. Everyone has different ideas; some don't think this country is so 'great'. Maybe if you'd have asked him why he didn't remove his hat, etc, he'd have explained to you why. No sense in acting like a rabid asshat.

With all due respect to you, sir.

Is their horse parked outside? Have they ever ridden a horse? I wear a leather jacket because I ride a bike. Not because I want to look trendy.
yeah i will second the eat-a-dick sentiment. i wear a cowboy hat - mostly because i hate having the sun on my head and face, but a lot of it has to do with the nostalgia and culture that goes a long with it.

do i take it off in a restaurant - it depends. how nice is the restaurant? how bad is my hat hair? i would *never* leave it on a hat-hook. stetsons are fucking expensive. my $10 straw hat, maybe. but not the stetson, no fucking way.

I wear leathers because I ride, not to go along with any culture or fad. Guess if you listen to counrty or western, thats all the requirements to wear a cowboy hat?

            This.

There are no "requirements" to be met before one is allowed to wear whatever. I'm an Army vet, but I don't get bent when I see someone wearing combat boots or a beret. As for wearing of hats indoors - I will only do it if I'm pretty sure my hat hair will look worse than keeping the hat on, and I will feel a little bit uncomfortable with the breach of etiquette, even if it doesn't bother anyone else.

That said, it hasn't fuck-all to do with willfully disrespecting common traditions and ceremonies in settings where they're prevalent, and where you're sure to stick out like an annoying asshole. Doesn't matter if you're a taoist - If you find yourself at an Orthodox mass, you stand up and sit down when everyone else does, unless you just want to be an asshole, in which case you should expect to be called on it.
