Yea I got into a good debate about this. I saw a rebel flag my buddy put on FB that "heritage not hate". I'm like yea, a flag that represents a government set up in 1861 by 11 slave states that declared their succesion from the US. So let me break that down. A flag that represents a 11 SLAVE states that disnt want to be part of AMERICA! That's a heritage id sure be proud of. Rednecks crack me up. Haha!

in all seriousness, i can understand being proud of some aspects of southern culture. There is a certain toughness, DIY ethic, self-reliance, love of rural areas and outdoor living, skills of hunting, fishing, use of firearms, etc. these are not bad values, and i can definitely understand being proud of those in comparison with a more metrosexual urban/cosmopolitan outlook.

HOWEVER, mullets, modern nashville pop-country, domestic light beer, and excessive douchebaggery-asshole-bigotry would not be in that list.

That flag is used by rednecks up here also, and yes, we do have plenty of them. I don't know what they feel it means to them though.

I'd rather see someone flying a flag with the Browning logo on it than not know the true history of the south and perpetuating a stereotype of moronity to others.

What gets me is the flag most people call the "rebel flag", is the Confederate battle flag. I have a Confederate flag on the front of my truck and most people don't know what it is.

I had a buddy who's grandparents have a house in Maine. from their flagpole they often fly the confederate flag. The grounds where the place is was once the grounds of a confederate base. They aren't racist and in terms of Mainerds, they are surprisingly not hick like.

Oh, I understand. I am a Mass-hole. Lived in New England for most of my life. Although I have never lived in Maine, it is the only place I truly feel at home.
