  • Carved panel in Athens GA????

I just had a Carved Panel go by me about lunch time today. I did a Uie but was not able to catch up. I would have to be in the slowest car ever made when something like this passes by. OK I think it was a 38-39 Henny Packard. It looked all original and pretty much complete. The panels were still in it! It was black had a good bit of patina and some primer spots on the hood and back door. It was being driven so it can't be in that bad of shape. The original wheels and caps were still on it and it was not lowered so I don't think it has been boogered with yet. $5999 and a phone number were written on the windshield. I am positive it did not say $15999.00. The phone number was written to small to catch it. I have been on the internet checking CL, Hemmings, Ebay and every other place and add could pop up. I can't find it. This car did not look like a junker. Its rare that I get this excited about a car but I think the deal of the century is in my back yard or some lucky SOB just bought it for a third its value. I would kill for a Henny carved panel especially a 39 since I had a 39 Sedan.
Are there any hearse dealers in Athens.

    Any hearse people in Athens?

Has anyone else seen this car?

    Any ideas People?????

My contact says that there is a known carved Packard in Athens that the owner refuses to sell. Neither of us knows if Richard's description currently matches, which will take more investigative work.

Di you know there are also two restored carved Packard hearses in Villa Rica, GA?

My parents live in near Villa Rica. I am down there every now and then. Where are the hearses?

A really smart amateur procar historian and forum lurker pointed out something.

Couldn't have been a '38-'39 Packard carved side coach.

Henney had exclusive rights to building on Packard chassis. According to the Henney book, by '38 Henney considered the carved look "antiquated" and was no longer offering them. This is the closest to a carved Henney offered in '38:

By default, you must've seen either a Packard earlier than '38-39 or another model of car. Baffling huh?

This is a 1938 Packard. The carved panel is same as best I can tell. It was one large panel like this one, not filled in windows like some had. It did not have an open top though, closed car. This thing is beautiful.

                  Okay, now we're getting somewhere.

Example you provided is a 1 of 1; the very last Miller Packard made. Henney/Packard exclusivity agreement started in '38. Miller did sell it's Art Carved model on Packard chassis through '37. According to the Miller Meteor book, Miller somehow procured a single '38 Packard commercial chassis and made the one off you showed (which still exists).

So if that is similar to what you saw, it could have been a '37 Miller Packard Art Carved. No '38-'39 Packard fits parameters otherwise.

I didn't know Miller made any. Could be a 1 of 1 as well or the last of a type left. Now I am really wanting to find this car. I have always wanted a carved panel. This one was the first one I had ever seen in person you just don't see them and when you do they are either to far gone, stripped or so god aweful expensive you can't afford it.

I was pretty sure it was a 39 but I could be mistaken I only saw it briefly they are very close.

Here's a shot I took from last summer of that very same '38 Miller Packard Art Carved. Told 'ya it still exists. And again, there was not a single Packard carved coach made after this one. If what you saw was indeed Packard, it must have been earlier. (I personally can't tell '37-'39 Packard apart quickly.)

If you want to see something carved in person there is a good chance one will attend the Asheville meet.

Still haven't heard back from my contact about the carved in Athens to find out what that one is or if it matches what you saw.
