  • Hearses for sale... just an observation

I've noticed the same hearses keep showing up on ebay every week. Even in October when sales should be at their highest, evidently people just aren't buying right now or even offering what the sellers expect to get for their coaches. Even the early 1960's coaches aren't getting very big offers, must be a sign of the terrible economy we're all suffering through.
Also in local publications & websites such as Craigslist it seems hearse prices aren't too hateful. I found a 1952 Superior very similar to mine for $1200 or best offer in Toledo, Ohio. Oh, if I only had the extra $$$ it would be sitting next to my '51 out in the hotrod shop! Sure wish casket rollers were selling as cheap as hearses are on Ebay, good grief. Even bidding stupid $$$ on rollers I STILL get beat out all the time...

I think the economy has a lot to do with it. Recently when gas prices were very high (4.50) I had someone call and talk to me about my coach. She was nice, but gave me the usual Craigslist sob story about not being able to afford a lot of car and how she liked the hearse because "it was different." She lost interest when I told her that it was $175 to fill up and got 6 miles to the gallon. HAHA

I'm willing to wait. I'm in no hurry to sell my coach (which is for sale here btw). So I list it and sit and know that someone out there will come across it and want it.

And yeah, I was surprised at how little action I got in October.

I've been watching the Canadian Hearse market crumble a bit since the high gas prices... Now that the price of gas has come tumbling down it will be interesting to see if the Hearse market improves...

I see your point on the gas situation, but most of us hearse enthusiasts love our coaches... they are our hobby & passion so the cost of gas didn't bother me personally because I pay whatever it costs for fuel to take my hotrods out on a saturday night. Even a local show is a nice treat or just a nice cruise around the area.
I think the main problem is no one wants to spend their savings with the economy being so terrible. Living in northern Ohio & working for a Honda supplier even we are beginning to feel the squeeze! So when people begin to lose overtime, forced extra days off, etc. we panic. The days of paid retirements & 100% paid benefits are a thing of the past, as well as jobs that pay as well as days of the past.
Don't get me wrong... i'm not "Mr. Moneybags" by any stretch of the imagination. Just a working stiff living week-to-week, and yes I have "toys" but have built them over time when my wallet allows... or when I hustle a car for a profit. That initial investment is what we are all avoiding right now. What I do is keep the "toys" seperate from what it takes to make it month to month. That way when I hustle a classic car for a profit or sell some parts, it goes right into my toys or buying another! It's much easier to let go of "free" cash.
Hell, if I had my way I'd sell the 1964 Mercury & buy "Big Evil" in a heartbeat... but no one's spending any cash on old "turnpike cruisers" right now either! Thanks for the replies on this subject... it's nice to learn what others think...

Yeah i hear ya man, its sad you get all these people who say yeah i jsut have to have a hearse, then shit gets kinda dicey gas wise and people are like ooo fuck this, or they dont relize how much goes into having a hearse or a pro car in general, they defitnly aint cheap to maintain. And the true passionate people will have our coaches or ambulances no matter what. Ive had soo many people say i should sell mine with all the problems i been having with it, i look at em and say no, cause i love the car and as long as it can be fixed and still tear up the road, Vicky will be mine lol. Only way im thinking mine would be sold is if i got a new coach or it just wasnt worth fixing any more. But yeah i hear ya on that one, us enthusist will just smile and say meh.

I agree. I did sell mine but to a fellow member and I'm walking right now. People say I should get a truck or something that gets good mileage but I keep telling them the only kind of a new car I'll get is a hearse.

I might actually get a new one real soon from a friend of mine too, a 1990 Cadillac by Eagle.

Nobody is buying anything. My indie saab shop in PA said they picked up a 2 year old 9-7x luxo sport ute for under $12Gs. Prices will need to come down if anybody wants to sell anything.

Yeah, but for that to actually happen people need to accept what things they think are worth are actually worth which many aren't willing to do.

I am pretty relieved by it. Right now there is an amazing 1989 Eureka with a crown top for sale for $2000 down the road from me and I know that a year ago it would have been $4000.

I love hearses, they are my one true automotive passion, I can stay faithful to my human female until the end of time but I will NEVER be a one hearse man. That being said, as much as I love hearses I still remember the days when almost all of them were $800 used cars that no one wanted and it really pissed me off when people started going "Oh, this is a RARE hearse and as such I am going to ask $4000 for it" because that is just fucking stupid, THEN some knuckledraggers out there started PAYING that much for them and proving them right.

I know it won't last but it's at least nice to see the retards who think their 1977 S&S with no vinyl top is a precious, $8000 gem because they installed a set of $25 spinning rims and a $400 stereo (custom my ass) finally get hit in the face by the fact that you can't buy a hearse, add shit, then turn it around for a profit, it just doesn't work like that unless they find a buyer even dumber than they are.
