  • Ballpark figure on the cost of a new headliner

1989 cadillac fleetwood. Has a grey vynyl headliner now with a few holes. Looking to replace it with a black vynyl headliner. Anyone have a rough guess as to about what a shop normally charges for this?

Wow 80 views and nobody with a guess. When I take it down and get a quote ill post here and we will all know.

I would guess between $500-$1000 depending on the material you choose. Other factors might include how slow/desperate the shop is, and if they are creeped out by a hearse.

I am going to do some type of black vynyl, it has grey now. This shop is never slow or desperate, they are the best in the area and people line up to wait. And they have done several custom hearses so apparently that does not bother them. I did take it to a guy at a muffler shop one time that refused to get anywhere near it. The headliner is the first thing im getting done. When I am there I am also going to get prices for carpet, building and covring a wraparound love seat, recovering the front seat and redoing the door panels. when I get prices on it all I will post for anyone who is curious.

The carpet is really easy to do yourself. I got mine from 1-A. It was pre moulded and I bought extra material for the back area. Good quality, good prices.

So since im out of work with a broken hand I went and got some prices. The headliner done in a black basketweave material is $1098.00, I decided I would do the carpet myself. I am going to see if I can find a fleetwood front bench seat that is factory black leather at a junkyard because they want over 2 grand just to recover the front seat in black leather or a little over 1 grand to do it in a cloth. After getting these prices I didnt even talk to them about the doors or love seat right now.

Holy crap Maximpakt! I just got ALL the seats redone professionally for my 1964 Mercury and it was $500. Mine's a huge car with a bench seat & big back seat. I'm putting them in today & will add some pics. Too bad you're not closer to Ohio I could hook you up with who I use. My people don't do headliners though, just seats. They did them from scratch as no one sells upholstery kits for a '64 Monterey, they used a durable marine vynl that looks like leather. $1,000 is insane for ONE seat!

Here's the upholstery work my friend does, these are my Mercury seats. I've been putting the backrest on the front seat today & the side trim... put the back seat in this morning & it's like 18 degrees today so the front seat got assembled in the back room of the house! Anyway here's a couple pix of the new upholstered seats:

As best as I can tell from the pics, it looks like good work. I will definitely be getting some other prices. These guys have been around forever and do great work but good lord.

You might want to look into this: Seeing how you're in Florida there's probably some boat manufacturers around there... ask around because they all do their own upholstery & chances are the upholstery people do it on the side too. That's how I found my connection. Baja boats here in Bucyrus (out of business now) worked 3 shifts so I watched when they got off work & went there asking people walking to their cars if anyone knew if the upholstery people did side work... BINGO they did. Checkmate boats are also here in Bucyrus & I heard there's side jobs done by their employees too. It may be worth your while to ask around IF there's some boat shops around you. I wonder how they kept a straight face quoting you $1000 for ONE bench seat... as you said "GOD GOD" is right!

And keep in mind, I went in with black leather in mind, so the first price I was hit with was between 2000 and 2500

So after some more searching I found a reputable company that will do the headliner for between 6 and 8 hundred. And I found a guy that has been doing work out of his house for 40+ years that will do both front seats in black vynyl for 250 and carpet it for 200. He can also do the doors etc. He will do everything except the headliner.

You found yourself a great deal! Sometimes it pays to ask around & seek out people who don't advertise or have a fancy storefront. Congrats! Post some pics when you get your headliner & seat done?

Well, things are progressing nicely. Since im out of work with a broken hand me and the wife have been working on the car. I got my head unit installed, have been running a boatload of wires. Started building speaker boxes. My rearview camera is in. The LED skull eyes around my license plate frame are actually connected and working. Have the alarm in hand ready to go in. Waiting on my 1/0 wire to get here to get power to the amp rack. And I dropped her off at the shop to get the headliner done this morning. I will post more pics in my photo album soon.

Update: Car is back from getting the headliner done, looks great. Ended up being $795.00 for the headliner. Seats are at the shop getting done now. Main speaker boxes are in and I am working on trim panels and running the last few wires. There will be updated pics in my photo album later tonight.
