  • Getting fired because I drive a hearse...

Back story first: My name is Eric,I sell high end wooden play sets here in Phoenix. I've run the operations out of this location covering the entire state for the last 4 years for this owner. He live's in San Diego and comes out now and then to say hi and to give me an extra day off from time to time (I work 6 days a week, but am salaried). So back in 2007 an Adult DVD shop opened across from our parking lot. This location is in an industrial type shop area. These guys made it very clear the product they sell by painting on the side of the building a huge "Adult DVD's, Novelty and Theater". So when our lease was up we moved down the street to a better location. Now the parents don;t have to see the shop. But unfortunety there is a "Private Dance" Shop very descretly parked across from us. No biggie they are only out after dark, whereas we are not. So he has been struggling to make ends meet the last 7 months, and I work all these extra hours to try and make a living. Now the situation which I think is BS. I go and buy this beautiful 1970 black hearse pictured below. Love it. Traded it straight across for my 2000 Pathfinder and am happy as can be. Now I knew I was going to get crap for the car from my very conservative owner and even parked it way down the street away from the property. He told me not to park it in the yard where our customers can see it. No problem. The last thing I want is some snot nosed kids thinking he can climb on my car. We have an adjoining lot that is used for storing (inside, out of view) our product for installs. This lot is separated from us by a 8' tall brick wall. Once and a while I park it down in there as it is less visible than directly on the street. It;'s hard to see from the street as you drive down looking for our lot. The giant "Live Girls" across from us stands out a bit more than my dark Cadillac. No problem, or so I thought...
Today he drives out to drop off product for install latter this week. I knew he was coming so it wasn't a surprise visit. I had the caddy park down in the adjoining lot off the street. He see the caddy sitting there and goes completely nuts on me...asked me why the hell it was on his property and told me to move it. "OK, where?" In the street? He told me he couldn't stop me from parking it in the street but he did not want it on his property period. Now obviously I wasn't caught doing something I wasn't supposed to be doing..I was working away as normal when he came into the office.
This guy was so mad at me for not only having a "Hurst" on his (rented) property, but having my web site pasted across the windshield as well. I asked him what makes it better in the street than tucked away on the side and again he said he could not stop me from doing that. GeESs! WTF. So he goes out takes pictures of the hearse now parked plainly visible in the street, storms back in and tells me to leave. Stop what I'm doing and just go. "Take tomorrow off and I will let you know what I'm going to do about this" Take tomorrow off?!? It's my only day off anyway moron!
So now I sit here waiting to hear from him on whether I still have a job or not. For the past year he has slowly run this small business into the ground by making stupid calls. I let all my sales crew and installers go due to slow traffic. I was the last straw. I worked both sales floor and catalog drops. Built several play set displays as well as did several installs. I practically gave this guy my last 4 years without asking fro a single raise. Now because I have a hearse he feels I am ruining his business. I don't have to tell you people about the constant waves, thumbs up and cell phone assaults I get everyday with this coach. I can honestly say that children just don't know what it was used for. The only time a boy told me what it was, was when he was reffearing it to a car on GTA.
Being in the retail industry for the last 26 years, this is the most bizzare behavour I have ever seen. Personally I think it was an excuse to fire me so he wouldn't have to pay me unemployment. This sucks....To all the people going that extra mile for your company or boss, STOP! It ain't going to mean sht when it comes time to go.
OK, sorry, I had to vent to someone....

Wow... I am truly sorry. It's sad to know how stupid people can be. Hopefully you won't lose your job over what kind of car you drive. And if you don't, you should still start looking for another job anyway.

Man that is some bullshit - I'm betting that you are right about the trimming back on costs and can't think of a better way to do it. I used to work for a mustang only junkyard and when times got tough the dickhead who owned it would blame everyone on the shop for business being slow (never of course taking a second to consider that being high as giraffe pussy on all your prices and being an errant cock to every customer that called is what might slow business down just a hair).

I hope it all works out man.

I have been deinied jobs for driving a hearse, and the unfortunate part is in Arizona, it is not against the law to deny or fire some one for no specific reason or an obsecure reason. As long as it isn't enforced be the Federal standards: Race, Creed, Sexual Preference, etc.
I got a lawyer about this years ago and was informed of these right to work rule.

Damn man that is totally unreal! He probably took pics to cover his butt in court showing how your coach was a huge "fear & shock" factor deterring customers from the store (parked out front in the street) & scaring everyone away with it's presence. Also that you were using "his" time to promote your side business. Eric i'm sorry to hear he's so narrow minded & odd in his ciews. Wish you all the best my friend, but remember his mentality & even if you don't get fired it looks like it's time to seek other employment for your own peace of mind. Driving my hearse home to Ohio from Florida I stopped at a little motel in Tennessee to catch a few hours sleep, went in & bought a room for the night. It was a motel that rents most of it's rooms by the month... even though it was 2am people were looking out their windows at the hearse backed up to room 124... manager knocked on my motel door & kindly asked me to park my coach out a little ways in the center of the parking lot as his renters were all calling the lobby to find out who died & what happened! LOL i understood & moved it. You have a job to do, what does what you drive to work have to do with your job performance? You even complied to his requests not to have it in plain view. Let us all know how it all turns out...

I don't know man, I'd maybe have some ammo of my own. If you think he is going to can you and deny you unemployment, I would search your memory for ANYTHING he might have done that would be a cause for local agencies to take note.

One of the guys who works for a shop out here in the hearse club got threatened with termination one day, so he whipped out a notepad with the EPA, OSHA and the Board of Labors numbers on it. He told his dickhead boss that if he wanted to play hardball, he would call every number and tell them about the illegals he had working there, the failures to meet OSHA codes and the numerous environmental laws they were violating all the time. Needless to say, he had some job security after that.

              Just a suggestion.

Again. like KaptainKaos said, AZ is a right to work state. These employers can fire you for no good reason and not have any repercussions. No court... As for the joke, e is not the joking type. He "text" me this afternoon to come in tomorrow. He didn't say weather he would be there or not. I guess it's time to bring in some boxes to pack up my shit.

I know they cost a bit, but what if you were to buy a cover that could fit the hearse so that you can cover it while its parked there? That way no one would be able to see it. Do you suppose he would be ok with you doing that instead of firing you?

The real question here is, if he's so petty as to judge you by what you drive instead of your work ethics or your dedication and loyalty to him and his company, Do you really want to work for this asshole anyways?

I don't work with him directly. Matter of fact he has only been in front of me physically for less than 8 hours total last year. I work for my customers. I am my own boss and manage on average 3-5 outside installers daily.I just tell him how much money I made him daily. I am looking into a cover now, anyway that’s a good idea for AZ. I blame this on the fact he is born and raised in England. They have different views than us "Yanks". He had a bad moment Tuesday afternoon. After he cooled down (and spoke with his wife about it) he sent me an e-mail explaining why he doesn't want the hearse close to the store. It took him 24 hour to do it but here it is...
"I accept your explanation that you didn't see the Hearse being parked so close to the store as an issue, as I did. I will in future make myself clearer to all when expressing my opinion and requests on what I think will and will not in my eyes effect the business. I would greatly appreciate it if the car not be parked where it could in some way be offensive to any of our potential customers. I'm certainly not blaming poor sales on this, just looking to do whatever possible not to make things any worse than they are."
This with a in-call business across the street and a 20' tall sign announcing "Live Girls"... Maybe having it parked out front the hearse is delivering the "Dead Girls". (I've seen them in the sunlight...not too far off on that description).
So now it seems things are back the way they were before he lost it about the hearse. Sales are down, moneys tight...bla bla blaa. I live to die another day I guess. Thank you all for your support on this issue. It took him over 24 hours to contact me and tell me where I stand. That by texting me and e-mailing me to boot. In that 24 hours I started to doubt my choice in buying this bEAUtiful classic car. That's also the way I look at it, a classic car that should be preserved for others to admire. Someday we will tell our children that this car came from a company that built grand elegant Cadillacs and then went belly up... and the way things look, it might be next week.

                        Thanks again people...

agreed. But with the way he decided to be such a major ass, I'd start looking for another job and totally fuck him over when i had the chance. No two weeks notice, not even let him know i quit. just never show up again.
