  • Road Trippin in the Hearse

So this last weekend we had a small vacation. Every year there is the west coast largest gathering of bikers in Laughlin, Nevada. It is 4 days of really good "people watching" and drinking. Some try their luck at the casinos tables some drink till they can't stand no more, so then they just sit down and drink.
I have a VW powered trike that I had built several years ago and normally take that to the run. This year it was sidelined due to a new ventilation hole on the top of the block, so we decided to take the hearse. At only 500 miles around trip it wasn't a huge deal to drive, but I am always nervous about it.
The weather was perfect and we rode there with the windows down. Occasionally being passed by choppers and baggers with thumbs up the whole time. In earlier post I had asked why the previous owner might not want to take the hearse over 45-50 mph, let me inform you that the 1970 Caddy was right at home doing 75-85. The looks we got at the gas stations were great. If only I could get a dollar for every photo snapped, it would have paid for the trip. Parking that monster in their parking garage was another story. Once I got her in the stall via the 26 point turn it was safe.
The return trip offer my 16 year old son the chance of a lifetime, Road trippin in a hearse! He had a bigger smile on his face when I asked him if he would like to drive it back home than when that drunk pole dancer bent over in front of him and mooned him!
The drive back was a little unsettling as he wasn't good at keeping the steering in the sweet spot (note to self: Replace the drag link and idler arm soon) but we made it back safe and sound, although a few years removed from my life. It was a good experience for him to drive something that big across the barren desert at 85 mph.
I will post some pictures of the trip this week. Now back to editing the Aprils photo-shoot, man this is a pain in the ass.

    There ain't nothin' like it....

There ain't nothing like the look on your kid's face when ya say the words, "Hey, you want to take the wheel for a while?" in a ride that he knows you will not let anyone else drive. My kid is older now but I will always remember road trips with him. Ya just sit back, hide the white knuckles, don't say much and drink in the look he has when he thinks you're dozin' and he's the master of the road in American steel. Glad you had a good run. Probably a good year for the trike to be down if it had to be. Look what you would have missed.

My son is 14 and had just gotten his permit not long before..(.He has been driving since he was 3, I used to put him on my lap and let him steer out on the gravel roads, we lived back up along the river and there was very little traffic...) We were out toolin' one night collecting looks.. I asked him if he would like to drive.. I thought I was gonna have to put on my shades he was beamin' so brite... Well he hesitated cause he thought of the responsibility he was undertaking...Oh Crap Dad is gonna let me drive his Hearse...It was perfect he handled like a pro with a little talk about length of vechile and the effect of the logistics of the rear end and front end when making them...It just so happened that a bunch of his buddies were standin' out in front of the pizza joint and some of their parents.. He kicked back cruised by and acknowledged the waves with slight nod of his head...He was so proud but I was prouder..... Great night... Never forget it...
