So... Anyone use a two speed rear? I was thinking of looking for one to hook up to my TH400 for the highway. Since there isn't a 2bbl intake manifold for the cad 368, thought that might save some fuel. Suggestions?

The only ones I know of are split axles for big 5 ton & above commercial trucks... which are far too big for a car. I'd leave it alone if I were you. Also, the overdrive transmissions you can get your hands on these days just don't seem to hold up in heavier vehicles like ours and tend to pop in & out of overdrive on hilly roads. In no time they are slipping & the transmission fluid is scorched.

That Gearvendors set up is hot stuff. In the end, that car is like a full size pick up. It's never gonna be good on gas no matter what you do. It is what it is. BTW, a 2bbl. will give you worse mileage than a Q-jet. The primaries on the Q-jet are fairly small. Stay out of the secondaries and they are more economical than the 2bbl. plus you have the balls when you need it.

Awesome! thanks for the link and info. I drove old mopars forever, so older GMs are relatively foreign. Honestly, as far as the carb/manifold goes, my first choice was to just go all out and get a dual quad offenhauser and a couple holleys, but again, not available. The gas consumption issue was more of my wife's issue-and if she's happy, I get to cruise!

That engine would impress the hell out of you just as it sat. Putting those heads on a low compression engine creates a 13:1 time bomb. It's not recommended w/o internal mods being done. Plus racing gas etc.
A high compression 472 will move it with authority also without emptying your wallet or making a tempermental beast out of it.

Hell, the 368 in it is already temperamental as is-Dunno if my fuel pump, fuel filter, or carb is hosed, but it's choking out. Just got a fuel pump, but the guy @ the parts store swore it was electric? I was pretty sure it had a mech. fuel pump....
But yeah, I remember my brother's '76 coupe with the 500... it's what started my lifelong love affair with Cadillac. But "the boss" wouldn't let me pick up an engine after I've only had the car a couple of months. Plus, it's next to impossible to do ANY work on it in the damn street.
