  • Hearse/Ambulance/Combo rear window ?

I'm hoping some of you guys on here can clarify something here for me. I'm still pretty new to procars after all.

I've seen it mentioned numerous places about Hearse/Combo rear windows. From what I gather, by what has been said, rear windows that roll down would indicate combo. Would a straigh hearse have rear windows that roll down? I see that some are fixed and do not roll down.

Anyone have a little more info on this for me? Much appreciated!

    Paul.

Well there is no real reason for a hearse's rear window to roll down. The only person back there will never complain about the heat. Combo cars often had someone sitting in the jump seat, and they could complain. I have seen combos where only the rear passenger window rolls down, I have seen both sides roll down. On the same note I have seen both instances with rear door handles. My hearse has no inside door handles or windows that roll down. The car I am restoring has both, on both sides. These are two of the things that make me think it was a combo. With the deck and the headliner gone, I don't have much else to work with in terms of clues.

I was just curious as my 69 M-M is a straight hearse. Landau traditional endloader. It was always used as a hearse. Has no jump seats, fresh air vent, nothing. Simply a hearse. Bot rear windows roll down (3/4 of the way) and all 3 rear doors (both side and rear loading) have interior handles, so all 3 can be opened from inside. But as I said, it is a simple, straight hearse.

I would go ahead and consider yourself lucky. I fear cleaning out the back of my hearse. If a nice strong wind comes along and shuts my doors while I am back there I would have to squeeze my fat ass through my partition window, and it is not that tall of a window.

I've gone in the back of mine and taken a nap on lunch break at work lol. I was just wondering if my particular hearse was an oddball or what. I couldnt figure it out why some went down some didn't...I dunno...

I was thinking of getting a gurney for the back of my combo. That would be good for naps.

I don't know for a fact, but I believe that up until a certain year all Miller Meteor procars had rear door handles and roll down windows, then just door handles. My 73 MM has rear door handles, but not roll down windows. My thought is that is was earlier to build all the same, than to leave it off just hearses. Another thought is the doors were built separate from the rest of the car and installed after interior was finished. Just my thoughts.

I don't know if this will help, but the windows in my 62 MM hearse do not roll down. The door handle question for me is moot since mine is a 3Way and the rear doors cannot open from the inside unless the drivers/passenger doors are open. I can open my loading door from the inside though.

My 69 M-M is just a hearse and the rear windows roll down as well.

Unfortunitly, I don't haven't seen many 3-ways. The doors might be made different in them. I know more work was put into them, as they are a different animal than all other procars.
