  • The 58 S&S up and running

Well, it isnt finished yet but it does run and drive now, made some trips before halloween with it. Got the 500 motor crammed in it with a th400 (old engine couldnt be saved) so with open 3 inch pipes and and minimal baffling its loud but fun!

does your speedo work? if so, how did you hook it up to the turbo400?
the car looks good by the way.

Well, the speedo would hook up but the ratio is wrong so i will have to find something to change it. It says i am doing a lot more speed than i am. I am sure they make a ratio changer but not sure on what it would be, have to do some research on it.

on our 58 M&M, it looks like the speedo cable is a different size from the tranny connection. not sure though.

Well, it screwed on, same size there, but was in a big hurry and didnt look to see if the square part was same size. I am sure i will have to rework it but at the time never fiigured on speeding in it. But who knows. Just was glad it worked and drove. Tranny part wasnt bad, but getting the 500 in was a pain!

lol yeah, it took a few mods to get the 425 into ours, but nothing that cant be put back when we can afford the 365 rebuild.

Havent tried the 425 swap, the 500 of course means a major cross section cut and weld job. Only way to go back is to replace the whole crossmember again with another, and relengthin the driveshaft, but rest was no change. Building the headers custom welding was a pain too........still needs some ground clearance work!
Doubt i will go back tho, maybe get a second one with original engine to go with it would be nice, maybe a 58 landau to make a nice pair!? If I can find one!

the 58's are getting hard to find, i haven't seen any landau styles in Ga. ours has documented history behind it. that's the only reason i want to go back to original motor.

In the fall of '84, I was selling yearbook ads in the next town south of ours, we were told to hit the funeral home there because they always bought one. To this day, I remember seeing the ass end of a pale blue '58 Caddy hearse sticking out of the old shed behind that place.......
