  • Favorite gun shop?

Decided to buy a few handguns for the house (burglar alarm went off last night about 1:30 in the morning, I come out buck naked with my super sharp machete in hand to find that we hadn't latched the back door sufficiently and that the wind blew it open. I did not feel that ability to defend my home and family was adequate and since I don't work nights any more I don't have to worry about coming home and waking Nikki up in a flurry of bullets - the time to buy is now). Looking for some suggestions for good carry and home defense for me, and good home defense for her. And looking for a good local shop that you trust. I, as always, am favoring a 1911 in .45 and I'm big enough to carry one reasonably well, but not sure what to get Nikki.

    Thoughts?

Trading place pawn in Monroe. They even have an indoor range. Go early when they are less busy and they can really spend time with you to determine your needs.

I recently bought a few guns. Bought two pistols both Springfield XD, .45 and 9mm. I love the .45, I bought it first and bought the 9mm because the ammo is cheaper. Springfield makes a subcompact .45 XD-S. Springfield has three different styles XD, XD-M, and XD-S.

Springfield XD's are good guns, my brother has 2 of them. For a good home defense set up I would go with a decent 12 gauge pump shotgun and a good pistol in .45acp or 9mm.
When we sleep at night I have my Colt 1911 and my Ruger lc9 in the bedside drawer and a loaded Mossberg 12 gauge in the closet loaded with 00 buckshot.
When you get your gun or guns though learn to use them! don't just stick them in the drawer and assume you will know what to do when the time comes.

Another good store is Clyde armory just outside of Athens at the end of hwy 78. It's the building that looks like a castle.

For your 1911 I would go with a Colt or a Kimber, however I would look at other options as well because 1911's are expensive.
You could get 2 Glocks for the price of a good 1911.

          Look into these guns:
          Glock, any 9mm or .45
          Beretta 92fs 9mm
Springfield Armory XD series, again any 9mm or .45
          Smith & Wesson M&P9 or M&P.45
Ruger sr9 for full size or lc9 if you want something compact

I would avoid any semi auto caliber other than .45 and 9mm for defensive guns.

Get a good shotgun as well, something simple like a Mossberg 500 12 gauge PUMP, always a pump, racking that slide is enough to make most people think twice.

Research them and then go look at them in the stores. I put 5 to 10 hours of research into every gun I buy these days.

What are your thoughts on Rock Island Armory 1911?

Shotgun I'm pretty sure I want another 870 Express - but I'm down for a Mossberg too.

One of my brothers has a Rock Island Armory 1911, and it's broken, won't eject the shells.
Look at that Clyde Armory site at the handguns, they carry some good 1911's like Colt, Springfield, Smith & Wesson, Kimber, Dan Wesson, even Sig has some 1911's.
The price differences should say all you need to know. I would bet my life on my Colt, I would NOT bet it on my brothers Rock Island.

i agree with LMS, only i keep my mossberg with a round chambered. so crackheads won't get a warning noise other than the safety disengaging.

my carry gun is an auto-ordinance 1911 in .45, as you all have seen many times. i do have a cheap .380 i keep as a "car gun" that stays in my daily driver for when i'm going into places where i can't legally carry.

They are snobs, Plain and simple.
Go to either Trading place pawn in Monroe, Hilltop pawn in Snellville, Clyde's armory in Athens, or Franklin's in Athens, all have very friendly knowledgeable employees who won't look down their noses at you. Also go early when they are not busy so they can really spend time with you finding out your needs.

A 20 gauge shotgun with birdshot. Birdshot in the home will tear open an intruder, but not blast through your house walls into the neighbors house. OObuckshot will punch holes in every wall you have, plus your neighbors too.
A .45 with hollow points will kill and not go into your neighbors house. A jacketed bullet would probably go into your neighbors.
Dont use special or homemade rounds. Only use factory ammo. Reasoning is; a defence lawyer will say you made the rounds, or used special rounds to inflict unusual pain and suffering.

gonna have to disagree on the birdshot. bird shot is for birds. it doesn't have the penetration power to stop a bad guy. anything that has enough power to put down a bad guy has enough power to penetrate a standard wall. that's just part of the risk of "doing business" in this case.

#4 turkey loads for home defense. Hollow points for hand guns.

                              stay away from springfield xd

get springfield GI1911 or Highstandard 1911 or get a glock if you want ultimate self defence pistol and a 12 guage short shotgun, when i trained with the navy seals all that was used was glocks, you dont want to have to fumble with safteys when it comes to defense of life. you just wanna pull and shoot.

remember a pistol is only used to get to a rifle or shotgun, thats why i recomend a 12guage with shot in it, or you can alternate shot slug shot slug, that way its safe to not travel to far past what your trying to eliminate and kill innocents.
