    It's very easy to replace a sending unit, if that's your problem. My hearse had no gas tank when I got it. The tank in it now is from a 1988 Dodge caravan so the sending unit didn't work with the caddy gauge. I installed an after market gauge hidden in the ash tray.
    My real problem was that I forgot about a leaking fuel filter earlier in the day and just assumed I still had enough fuel.

        I drove my 64 home from Portland, Oregon to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada thru 2 savage winter blizzrds...No problems...
        I pick it up from the shop after it gets "passed" for insurance and run out of gas 1/2 a mile from home on the highway..."Honey, can you fill up the gas can and come get me???!?!"
        ...and yes, my gas gauge eithe reads full or empty, nothing in between!!!
