  • HB License Plates????

So I went to register the Buick Hearse and the lady at the tag office said I'd have to wait for my tag as they didn't have the hearse tags in stock.

Having never heard of this before I got her to explain. Apparently just like large truck tags are different, hearses are supposed to be a sequence of numbers ending in HB, and limos end in LM.

I was worried that this may be just for commercial purposes, like funeral homes only. So she verified with her superior who said that regardless of if its privately owned and used as a daily driver, or if it's in service, all hearses not running custom plates must use an HB tag.

This is my 7th coach and the first time I've heard of it......any of you guys experienced this?

That's very interesting. They probably just started doing it, so they can charge you more money for the registration, lol.

Mine is registered as a station wagon/ Hearse, and it has custom plates. I just pay standard tab fees, but a few years ago they decided they wanted to make more money, so they added weight to it now, and now I pay an extra $50 because it weights so much, lol.

I'm sure that it's all different state by state though.

I didn't think of that....this is the first one I've had that's new enough to require the title vs just the bill of sale and I also bought it from the original owner/funeral home. All the others I've had I just had the bill of sale and insurance, all of which just had 'em down as Fleetwoods. That's probably why I hadn't encountered it.

yeah mine is registered as a cadi fleetwood, and is also old enough not to require the title. that could be the difference.

All 3 of mine are registered as Fleetwood or Brougham. I have regular South Carolina tags on all of them.

Mine has an Antique tag, but we just got a letter saying that antique tags will cost more now. So next month when I register it I will go back to the regular tag. I will let you know what kind they give me then.

We have collector plates on my wifes 78. Title states that it is a cadillac hearse. My 70 also states its a hearse. Registerered with collector plates. Went collector plates to save money $360 one time fee for life and they are transferable

Don't know how lucky I am, but my TITLE lists the hearse as Cadi / Fleetwood / 4DSD. No problem at all w/ insurance or reg. My custom "RIP86" plates do cost an extra $30/yr.

I did notice lately that a bunch of taxis have TX in the plate and limos have the LM in them. That must be new.

disabled person tags rule because they all start with DP.

Ethyl is rwgistered as Cadi AM which I assume is Cadillac Ambulance. But She had just a regular tag until I got the vanity plate. I even asked about the HB when I moved to Walton from Rockdale and the woman had no clue what I was talking about. However when Dippy bought the hightop and had it registered in Walton he got an HB tag. He even said at the time that when she grabbed the tag she had to blow the dust off of it. And Christine's Buick has a regular tag but I think her's is registered as a Buick LaSabre 2 door.

Well it seems as though it's new, yet they changed it. The tag that was on it, just as the lady at the tag office said, was a bunch of numbers ending in HB

I got my new tag in the mail today and it seems that now the HB leads the numbers...

Using the "press connections" that I have I've contacted several law enforcement officials.....o.k. full dosclosure....I asked 2 local P.D.'s 2 local sheriffs and 2 State Patrol officers.....in true Ga DOT fashion, NONE of them knew the HB, LM, or TX tags even existed.

So despite the DOT's claim that there's a fine for driving a hearse without one of these tags I wouldn't worry.
