  • 383 is in the garage!!

    ..and that's where it will be until I figure out how I can get the engines swapped without costing my other arm and leg. Not to mention, I think I might need a new trans or rear end or something, cuz this engine is 400+hp/450tq. But the important thing is--I have the 383, and that puts me 1 step closer to going to Monster Bash with Erzabet.

        Will do. Gotta get my girl's camera when she gets back in town.

        You guys thing my stock tranny and rear end will be able to handle this engine? I'm not drag racing or anything, but occasionally I might want to punch it a bit to get in front of that kid's civic.

          it'll prob hold up for awhile.....i'd think about having the tranny built though......and wouldn't hurt to beef up the rearend down the road. Are you on a chevy or buick platform (i can't remember). Just not sure what rear-ends they ran in those cars....like a 10 or 12 bolt maybe? If you're that worried about rear-ends get you a 9" outta a 70's Lincoln, read the info tag on the housing if it has an 'L' after the gear ratio its a locker. Pick one up at Pull-A-Part i think for $100......that'll give you the beef you need, plus a locker and ease of changing out gears by picking up different chunks here and there.

              I know someone else built this motor, the question I have, is is it built for torque or race? You'll want the torque on a big car, you'd hardly never use the top end power. My buddy built a stump puller of a 383 for his truck, it would not spin over 5000 rpm, but it would pull a trailer, fry a tire and jump out of the hole like nobody's business.

                  Thats about what I have. Thats a strong engine. It will idle a little lumpy and not pull much vacuum. Be sure to buy a 2500 rpm stall converter for your transmission.
                  Try not to "over carb it". Many people will tell you to run a 750 cfm, which would be great on a light car, but with a very heavy car that has a/c and power brakes, I wouldn't go any larger than a 650 cfm.

                          you should tpi it for torque reasons youll be extremely happy with the results i promise i had a tpi caprice wagon and i had to remind myself it was a wagon occasionally something carb power just wont give you torquewise

                              meh tpi units can be found on most peoples local CL quite cheap

                              this is a 383 i built for a chevy blazer last year i went with an 850 demon double pump lots of torque lots of what i like to call pant wetting speed too

                              but i wish i had tpi'ed it
