  • Draining the Battery

Found out what was draining the battery in my 80 S&S. The radio. I pulled the radio fuse last week, and she has plenty of juice now. My mechanic told me Delco radios are notorious for this. Cool, now i don't have to disconnect the battery all the time. But now no tunes.

Sounds to me like a good excuse to do a little radio upgrading!

I wished that's what was draining my '69, but mine didn't even come with a radio

Measure the drain current. They all have some drain for the clock and station memory. There may be a solar or electric bounce charger that can keep the battery up. If it's less than 2 amps, a $20 electric one should do the trick. The solar ones in that price range put out only about 250 ma, but that's all we've needed (per battery) for our equipment.

I have a battery disconnect on my hearse. At car shows I like having the doors open and there are 5 lights in the rear that stay on. If you have a digital radio you will have to reset the stations. I don't have that problem, because my hearse has the original. I use my IPod when I drive Her, but if I don't have it we listen to oldies. Because that's what She likes.

I have an aircraft circuit breaker that I pull to disable the bier compartment lights, but I'll have to admit that I kick ass with electrical work, I hate fuses, I'm modest as hell, and I'm a little bi-curious.

OK, I admit it, I'm gay. What were we talking about again?

I had to disconnect my battery at that last show so I decided to do a little upgrading. I installed an Optima Yellow top to not only help out with the system but also so I can leave my doors open without having to worry about draining the battery completely.

It also keeps most people from stealing your car when you have to park it for a while.
