  • I need some help please

Ok, I've already exhausted my network of mechanic friends so now im tapping you guys. My new hearse is acting up. Heres whats shes doing. I turn her off and it sound slike the defrost is still blowing real low. I can actually feel some air comming out. Car is completely off and yet it runs my battery down and I have to jump her, after I jump her its still going. What can I do guys?

I would venture to say a short in the A/C control head. Short term solution may be to pull the blower fuse. Shade tree diagnostics would be to pull and reinstall fuses one at a time until it stops. Once you find the fuse that makes it stop, check that system more thoroughly with a multimeter or pull power on the components one at a time...

Boogy makes some good points. I have seen the coils the blower resistor melt together causing a short and the motor receives constant power.
The fact of a "key off" situation makes me think a relay is stuck open.

Look at it at night. If the ALT light stays on with the key off (you didn't say what kind of car), but late 60s to some 80s Cadillacs have a problem with the blower relay shorting out. I've actually seen the fusebox melt down. This is a problem that can also cause the control head to carbon track and overheat the board or the connector. The only wiring diagrams I have are 75 Cadillac and 76 Chrysler, but if your car is within a few years of those, I can take a look for any other possible problems.

She's an '86 fleetwood s&s victoria. I tried pulling th fuses and replacing them, nothing. I really wanted her up for the holiday, any other ideas besides me taking her to the shop?

ok i disconnected my blower fan so i dont have ac/heat/defrost but at least she wont die in the middle of the night. thanks for all the input. I'm thinking I'll just put a toggle switch on the battery till i can get a permanent fix.

No, you missed the point. Pull out fuses until the blower motor stops. Then you know what wires to start chasing down. Replacing fuses was not the idea.
For the short time, unplug the fan when the car is not being driven. Let it run while you are driving. No point in not having a heater or defrost while you are in the car.

I did get the point I just didn't express it. I pulled out each fuse individually. I already figured out about hooking the blower up while driving . It was raining today.

I just recently went thru some wiring on my 82 S&S, and this is what I found in MY case.....your mileage may vary.
I noticed that there is a relay under the drivers side of the dashboard, which, in my car, plugged into a socket on a white plastic mounting panel to the left of the main fuse block. the blower relay on mine was at the very top, and as mentioned earlier, the socket this relay plugged into was melted.
It looks like the previous owner had removed the relay and wiring from the melted block, and rewired a new relay directly to the wires they removed from this block. If that relay is cooked inside, the relay contacts could be stuck together, causing your blower to run all the time.
FYI - the relays look like rectangular metal boxes about the size of a matchbox car or a bit smaller......at least in 1982 they looked like that.
