They keep it from crashing into/through your partition wall, I've had two diffrent cots do that, and almost take my head off, it's a good investment if you have a person who leaves cots in your car and does not tell you so that you stop at a sign and it comes to sit up front with you during a hailstorm when your trying to find shelter....These basical clamp down on the legs of the cot to anchor it to the inner wall of the hearse

That would definetely ruin your day. I'm not safe at all from flying stuff in my car. When I installed the system I removed my partition all together.
