i have a shop manual comming in, but quick question what battery do i need for a 1961 cad hearse? cold cranking amps and so forth?

550 CCA should be sufficient. Keep in mind whether yours is top post or side post terminals and whether the battery will fit in it's location. I have a 1961 Miller and a 1961 Superior. What do you have?

When I replaced my battery I got one with both side and top terminals. I connected on the side and used the top to jump friends. Warning, having two batteries means everyone will ask you for a jump. Did make me feel like He-Man though.

          I HAVE THE POWER!

As a rule of thumb, always go with the biggest battery that will safely fit in the original location with the most CCA. 550 CCA is a little light for a big block car.

Yeah, and get a deepcycle to run everything else if you can have a second.

Other good information is make sure it's ventilated and not sealed. Also never set it on the cement/ground as it will drain it. (all crap I didn't know).

550 CCA has been just fine for my 61, and has never had any issues. If you are planning on running a bunch of auxilliary equipment, then you would need something bigger.

Exactly, and with a hearse "axillary equipment" is almost a requirement.

                    Lights + Siren
                    add on lights (underglows, interior)
                    CB radio
Standard radio (can drain the battery if you're jamming to tunes for hours and the car isn't running).
                    LARGE speakers/sub box
                    motorized table
                    violet wand
                    any other "accessories" I didn't think of/mention

Also it should be stated that don't get a deep cycle as your main battery because from what I've heard they don't have the "cranking amps" to start the car. Although jumping the main from that one did come in handy when I was having ground issues and it would die all the time.

Well my advice is all based on the stock appearance and the ASSUMPTION that the asker would be keeping it close to that. If I was asked what type of battery to use in a Ghostusters clone, then the advice would be quite different. My 61 Superior will be getting 2 full 48"emergency lightbars with spots and directional arrowsticks, undercarriage LED's, interior LED's, 4-corner strobes in the marker lights, wig-wags for the headlights, HID headlight conversion, stereo with a full compliment of hidden speakers, GPS unit, exterior speakers, aftermarket air conditioning, wireless laptop outlet, 165 amp alternator, 2 900 CCA batteries under the hood and 2 deep-cycle batteries under the floor. It just depends on what you have to run with it. I repeat, the 550 CCA battery is adequate with the stock configuration.

Its not that 550 wont do the job, but a big block engine takes a lot more torque to turn over. That requires a bigger starter. Big block starters can draw up to 200 amps. It is much harder on a small battery to bounce back from that. When the battery is drained, it is much harder on the alternator to recharge it.
CCA's are like money in the bank. Would you like to have just enough to get by or plenty on reserve?

ps. Batteries on the ground do not discharge any faster. That is a myth.

Thanks, I'll inform my dad. I should really know better than to listen to him by now. He can't even change his own oil.
