  • STARTER PROBLEM

I was working on the 71 caddy today, the starter was just clicking when I turn the key and clicking again when I turned it off. I pulled the starter, tested it, motor spins, solenoid engages, works like it should. I found 2 wires that needed attention, one broke, one barely hanging on. Fixed them. I reinstalled the starter, got the same thing. Switched the 2 wires that go to the small termnials around, same thing. I can jump it across the termnials with a screwdriver and the starter spins right up.

Are the 2 small wire susposed to go on different termnials or the same one? If one, which one?

I am going to buy a remote starter switch just so I can get it started and put away before the Code enforcement guy comes, but I'd like to fix it right too.

    Anybody got any ideas?

If the screwdriver trick starts it right up, then I would suspect your ignition switch is going out.

I bought a remote starter button for it tonight, I will try using it in the morning and hope it works to get it started.

the small wires go like this
the wire from the "key switch" to hit the starter is the one near the moter from under the car the hard one to get the nut on might be red...

the other small wire is part of the points system it sends more juice to the coil to help fire the car off "i think thats how it goes"

Normally when I removed the starter out of my 71 i would undo all the wires except one of the little ones and then let the wire pull out of the connector. Sure, i had to crimp a new one on but I always new where the wires went.

          DAMN THOSE LITTLE WIRES!

Bought a remote switch, hooked it up, sprayed some starter fluid in it and she fired over. I let her warm up, added 2 qts of tranny fluid(how hard do you have to squeeze a tranvestite to get tranny fluid) and turned her around and backed her into the carport. 1 down, 5 to go.

On a GM, the terminal that starts the car when energized is usually labeled 'S', and the other one is labeled 'R', and is often not used. I took one of those solenoids apart once and came to the conclusion that the 'R' terminal hooked up to accessories that should turn off while cranking, but someone told me that I was wrong about that. My only diagram is for a 75, and is probably different.
