  • Dropping the drive shaft

Looks like I'm gonna drop the drive shaft to replace u joints this week. And the carrier bearing in between the drive shafts. Any one got a connection on these. It looks like a pillar bearing, bolted to the crossmember, that holds both drive shafts together. The rubber around it is shot. I think thats where all the vibration is coming from. I'll take pics for others future reference.

When you find one let me know where you got it? I think everyone on this board is looking for one.

When you pull it off, look for a part number. Check Chas. Bearing. When I needed a wheel bearing for the rear axle of my Pontiac, I couldn't find one anywhere. Took my fragments to Chas. Bearing, they found a number on it, but they didn't have one in stock. But I took the number BACK to Park's and they had one listed under Pontiac Misc.
Back to the carrier bearing, a Chevy/GMC 3/4 ton truck bearing should be the same or close.

Pull the carrier bearing and take it to a Carquest or a Napa or a similiar parts store and they should be able to match it up with something. Don't bother with Autozone,Pepboys, or O'reilleys. If their computer doesn't show it then it doesn't exist as far as they are concerned. I went to Autozone and O'reilleys for a headlight for the '62 and they said they couldn't get one. I looked on the shelf at O'reilles and they had one in stock.

Actually the opposite probably happened. An out of balance driveline will destroy the center support bearing.
Any good driveline shop will be able to get that bearing and replace it for you. Be sure to have your drive line rebalanced.

Dropped off drive shaft at 2:30pm. Got a call at 4:30 saying it was done. $188.47. For 3 u joints, support bearing and balanced. I'll pick it up in the morning and put it back in.

Drive shaft back in. Runs good. Pics later. The center support bearing is a standard GM 1 3/8". (on my 91 S&S) Any good driveshaft shop should have one in stock.

Using a driveline shop is definitely the way to go, when you're dealing with a vibration problem, and that sounds like a reasonable price.
