WHAT THE FUCK IS A ZUM-ZING?
In this case, I learned the easy way (someone told me) that you cannot use RTV silicone to seal windows. If you do, the window will come out the next time with the metal frame attached to it. There is acetic acid (like vinegar) in RTV that will corrosively attack the metal. That is what makes it stink.
The correct sealant is a urethane product that you get from body shop supply stores. Damn, I'm glad I learned that before I used the stuff. My window is already fitted with a couple of clamps to hold it, but no sealant yet.
I have to wonder if it corrodes engine parts the same way, though. I've never seen it happen, but then again, I don't use it on engines anymore. I don't use any sealant, because if an original gasket is a pain in the ass to scrape off, then I know that it was making a good seal and not leaking. Some people put a thin coat of RTV on a paper gasket, which is entirely the wrong thing to do, because an engine fluid can cut a bubble through it and make it leak.
