  • Hood hinge repair photo album

It may take me a few days to do it, but I have a new photo album which will chronicle rebuilding a totally trashed hood hinge (aka "unacceptable core") from a heavy Cadillac hood. It involves only some simple cutting, drilling, grinding, and welding, and less than $15 in parts. The first picture, fabricating a new link piece, is uploaded.

Make that four pictures now. This is working out great, so far. I might have this done as soon as tomorrow. It has been repaired before, successfully, but there just wasn't enough left of the rivets to repair the link, and the metal link piece was chewy gooey from having to straighten it too much. With a new link, it should last years.

It's taking forever because I have so much crap to do, and grinding kills my back, but I finished the hinge itself, and just need to put the crossbar on and install the hinge. I put another pic in my photo album.

Thanks for posting those, I've heard it was a pretty easy fix for the most part but haven't felt comfortable enough yet to to it.

It wasn't easy for me, but nothing is anymore. How easy it is depends on how f'd up it is, and your welding ability, maybe even the power of your grinder. The steps are in my photo album, but here's the finished product, ready for installation. I have the spring. It's not a $400 job, but it should hold a hood up, it's tight, but it still move easily. Y'all oil every joint regularly with engine oil, and you may not have to do this. I painted it while hot, which is why it's ugly around the welds. BTW, an electric welder on a generator works great. I have an L14-20 pigtail, but the generator is outside Jenny's window, and I did it to piss her off. La produit finit:
