Ok so avoid the 4.1 due to lack of power since I'm constantly roadtrippin, but on the 368 can you go into a parts store and get parts for it fairly easy? What other motor options came in the early 80's?
That's it... you have the choice of either a HT4100 (the aluminum block experimental engine) or the 368. Cadillac dropped the 425c.i. in either 1978 or 1979... I think 1979 was the last year for the 425. Looks like 1980 was the 1st year for the 368, and rumor has it the 368 is just a de-stroked 425 but don't hold me to that, i'm still learning somewhat too. In 1981 Cadillac introduced the 368 V8-6-4 which is the same 368 only it has the first attempt of dropping cylinders when you don't need the power... it's called "modulated displacement engine" and GM uses this technology today to increase gas mileage, but i don't know how reliable this system was in 1980. My Haines manual mentions this in depth & says it's an electrical connection that can be unplugged if you don't want it.
As for 368 parts, everything i've wanted to replace so far has been no harder to buy than any other 29 year old car needing repairs.

Have a good tranny guy check that AOD. AOD not adjusted properly will ride in between gears. It will seem like it's OK but it really can be misadusted. Have a good tranny guy check your kickdown cable. DO NOT attempt yourself. If you adjust it wrong you can destroy the tranny in Park! Have it checked and then you can think about gears...

STODD, thanks for the tip.....the damn thing HAS acted up like an old powerglide with the modulator hose not plugged in, runnin' hard up to about 40mph before it shifts.....doesn't happen every time though.
