  • No tunes :(

Now that I've got the coach running, shifting and in pretty dependable condition I need to get some tunes going. The car didn't come with a radio but there is a blank cover where the radio should be. Looks like it should just pop out, but after further inspection there appears to be a 2 screws in the back side with oversized retainer/washers that keep it from coming out the front.

Here's the part I'm not sure about. Do I just have to try and get a nut driver up in there to remove the screws or pull the gauge cluster part of the dash?

Never mind I'm an idiot! 4 screws and a lower section of the dash comes out to expose what I need.

Dude if I were you i'd make a new filler piece for the radio to mount in. Those "radio delete" panels are so hard to find not hacked up & bring alot of $$$ on ebay & other pro-car sites.

It came right out. There were only 2 screws holding it into place.

I'm trying to decide if I want to hack the dash for a full din type radio, relocate the radio (maybe overhead), or try and find a dual shaft model radio with a changer.

Be grateful yours didn't come with a "wonderbar" radio... Try finding something to fit that would operate a cd changer... I bought a spare dash grille to hack up to fit my coach, and put the origional away for another day...

Anybody familiar with any of these vintage/classic looking shaft style radios?
Vintage Car Radio - Modern radios, stereos and accessories to fit classic cars. Get cd players, bluetooth stereos, consoles and more for vintage autos.

Some of them have CD changer controls, usb for wma or mp3 and even ipod connections.

Also curious about the secret audio units:

It's either one of those options or hack up my dash and hope I can find a dash insert replacement if I ever regret my decision.

          Thanks

Ever thought about building a floor console and put it in there?
Build it and upholster it with a nice cover over the radio that flips up or something and you can hide it that way too
That would probably be the easiest and least destructive way to do it

Actually I was eye balling the the dash/tranny tunnel earlier to see how easy it might be to do that. Never done any upholstery work, but I have built speaker boxes and covered them with carpet. Maybe I could get a plastic install kit/face plate and add a dual cup holder or similar to it.

Just ran across the vintage car audio site and thought it might be worth looking into. Doubt anyone would consider even trying to steal a shaft model radio.

i put my stereo in the glove box so i wouldn't have to cut up the dash. if you get a stereo with a remote and/or hook up your MP3 player it works well

The vintage radios have a high failure rate, they are built very cheap! I always try to get people to hide a modern, higher end deck somewhere with a remote control, the glovebox is a good choice, like Ryan said. A radio that uses a usb drive for music storage kicks butt over a changer if you can find one!!

My coach has a ton of space under the casket table. The driver's side is for the spare tire, but the passenger side just carries the jack and essential fluids. That's where I intend to put whatever music storage device I decide on. There is good access for the wiring from there, too.
