  • Belt routing

I have a 68 superior combo on cadillac chassis... It has the 472 ci engine. The 472 has an AIR pump the belt is driven from crank and over the fan.. no problem, but the Alt. belt is driven from the fan only so if your AIR belt is loose you compound the problem by having that belt drive the alt... So I lost the AIR belt the other night and of course the charging system and had an overheat comin' on.. When I got belts I noticed a reference to eng # in the listings..Up to a certain eng# and after that Number took different belt.. I am curious as to the change and what it involved. I am looking but if anyone has any info on this I would appreciate it..I don't like the idea of the Alt. belt not being crank driven..

1968 was the first year for the 472 and I'm thinking the engineers realized they shouldn't have smoked that last joint before working on the accessory drive belt system.

Pretty much the option is to find an alternator/waterpump/crank pulley off of a '70 (not sure before or after if they existed).

Didn't we use to just switch the pulleys out for a set off of an early model 425 engine?
