  • Easy fix for sagging drivers door on a 3 way.

The drivers door on my 3 way would not close unless you lifted the door. It was sagging bad. I couldn't find anyone who knew how or had the correct wrench to realign the hinge so I took matters into my own hand and went to Auto Zone and bought some metal shims. I loosened the bolts on the bottom hinge and added 4 shims. Now the door closes like a new car. Here is a pic of the hinge with the shims installed.

If the door is sagging that means either the hinge has moved or the bushings are wore out. If yours had moved just adjusting it would have worked to get it aligned. If it is the hinge pin that is wore out, (which is what I think has happened to yours) adjusting it may work for a bit, but that is just covering up the problem until the pin wears more or even breaks. Auto Zone should have sold you a hinge bushing repair kit. It comes with a new pin and 2 bushings with an oversized OD. You have to knock out the pin, drill the hinge to the OD of the bushing, insert bushings, reassemble and realign the door. It is not as simple as it sounds though.

By putting those shims like you did you have localized the pressure from the weight of the door into a small area which may cause the area under it to bend. If you plan on keeping this fix, at least put shims under all the bolts to spread out the pressure as much as possible to prevent farther damage.

and when you are fighting with the pins and bushing might I suggest taking the individual hinge off and placing it in a secure vise, using a cut off tool with finese on the bushing and don't gouge the hinge around bushing or cut the pin usless you have too. and using a bigger hammer and punch to knock out the bushing, drill to size bushing, and use a flat bar and hammer to set bushing, it must be snug but not to snug or to loose. If you boo boo the bushing or the bushing is too snug of a fit it might crack and then you get to start over, (fastenal.com sales bushings and pins in many sizes usually bushings in box of 10 so you can get alot of practice...LOL) after you have the bushing snug in the hole re-assemble hinge and pin gently hammer the pin into place I have found GM and Dodge truck can be replaced usually with hinge on the vehicle, Ford cars and trucks and caddy hearses it is easier to pull the hinge and do it on the bench, remember to secure the door when removing hinge. It is a pain in the ass procedure but it will solve your problem instead causing more issues later from a quick fix.

The hinge moved but I dont have a wrench that can get to the back bolts. I have some off set wrench's but nothing near off set enough to get to the bolts. This is a quick and easy fix for a driveway paperweight. The fuel pump went out now so the main purpose for the quick fix was to stop the rain from running into the car and filling up the floor board. On a list of things that need to be fixed, the hearse is just about at the bottom of the list. I have a huge honey do list and as a truck driver I only get one or two days a week off so I don't have time to fix everything the correct way. Some times rigging shit together is the only option. LOL

If the hinge is loose enough, you can sometimes use a floor jack and a 2X4 to carefully lift on the door. Open the door just enough to get a decent purchase on the bottom, and lift it back into place... Be careful, too much force can damage the door!
