  • 1975 Caddy Limo stalls when hot

I have been having the following problem with my 1975 Caddy limo since I've had it: When the car gets to normal operating temp, it will suddenly stall out as I'm driving. Sometimes if I rapidly pump the pedal, it will come out of it, but will stall again after a while. I have replaced the pick up coil, module. Has newer fuel filter. I missed out on cruise nights, and car shows because of this problem. What do I do next?

I've usually found that kind of thing is a crummy carburator issue. Probably doesn't stall cold because the choke is still partially closed and giving it all kind of extra gas. 80 Fleetwood I have is doing the same shit. I stood there with the air cleaner off and when it started to stall, I covered the top of the carb with my hand and it caught it's breath momentarily. Not getting enough gas.

Could be Vapor lock. Check your fuel lines to make should they are not routed near areas of excessive heat.

I haven't yet, it looks like it has been on there for quite awhile, I may replace it to be safe

Already checked this, all lines are routed as they came from the factory

That could be, it looks kinda grimy on the outside

Some would disagree, but the Q-Jet is a great carb. Unlike the Holleys and what not they are rather precise internally and they don't tolerate much blockage to run like shit. The small primaries give good mileage and the big secondaries give good balls. Be patient and follow the set up info if you rehab it. It's not a slap it together deal.

If I have to rebuild the Q jet, I might have someone else do it for me

It's rather tedious. Not everybodys cup of tea. It occured to me, try disabling the vacuum to the EGR. If that's sticking open just a tiny bit, it will lean it out enough where it may not idle.
