  • 1978 Cadillac Superior fuel sending wire

My fuel gauge on my '78 Cadillac does not work... I bought one from JEGS. I think its the right one. Here it is. -----> http://www.jegs.com/i/Auto-Meter/105...oductId=745203

I need to figure out what wires go where. Any info would be helpful. Thanks

You may need an after market sending unit that works with your gauge.

The instructions with it should shed some light on the subject. Is it safe to assume you checked the resistance through your sending unit? A bad ground will make the gauge start to peg on full. That stuff can get rotted out good in New Hampsha.

How do I check the resistance through my sending unit? And its measured in ohms, correct? I'm assuming if it is ohms, then 0 ohms would be empty and 90 ohms would be full? I guess what im asking is what color would my sending unit wire be? if it is any help, my fuel pump is external on the side of my motor... I'll need to find my ground wire for the information from the tank... I have no clue where it would be or what color... I've seen some pretty rotted things in Good ol' New Hampsha. my frame is in pretty good shape, the vinyl top however was in horrible condition. I took that off and put herculiner... a Line X or rhino liner competitor... but it needs work.

There should be a connector accessible near the front of the tank with 2 wires heading to the top of the tank. The ground may be connected directly to the frame. Check that for condition. If it's good, ground the other wire. The gauge should go to empty. The only way to check the variable resistance is to have the sending unit in your hand to move it.
I'd make sure that ground was good before anything. You may end up dropping the tank anyway, but I'd look there before I got into a gauge. Rust nevah sleeps ya know!

Thanks. I'll get to that and let you know what happens. My stock gas gauge is located to the right of the speedometer. I notice it has not wires going to it, but a green clearish band with bands of metal that carry electricity to it... Like a really old version of a circuit.
