  • 500 timing marks

I am in the process of replacing the timing chain and gears in the 500 in
my 75 Fleetwood. I brought it up to TDC on the compression stroke, verified by timing pointer on 0, rotor pointing to #1 cyl on dist cap, and feeling compression out of the #1 plug hole.

I pulled the timing cover off, then removed the dist, and other items, to access the gears. What I observed, was the crank gear at 12 o clock, and the cam gear also at 12 o clock. Is this correct? It did have about 3/4 inches slack, but not enough to have jumped
    Any help will be appreciated

Should be fine, the crank turns 2 to 1 compared to the cam. As long as it blows out the plug hole, You should be good.

Yup...sounds like your'e good. As long as your'e sure you had it on a compression stroke...any minor slop can be taken out by turning your distributor. Love playing with those older engines, good and simple.

Yep, love working on old iron. It was definately on the compression stroke, as I felt good strong air out of the #1 spark plug hole

Thanks for the info! I saw some tiny cracks in the nylon part of the gear, so is a good thing I am replacing it. Is soaking the new chain, and gears in clean oil sufficient for lubricating them before installing?

I do that with pistons on an engine I'm getting ready to rebuild but I've never worried about timing components. It certainly won't hurt anything.

Be extra carefull installing the crank gear. The newer ones have been cracking. I know most would only use a Cloyes. This was talked about on another board.

A Cloyes timing set is what I bought

                500 timing marks

thanks to Denniss help I have managed to set the timing and it seems to be running just fine. But I still cannot find any marks on the flywheel. Yeah , I did the screwdriver in #1 cylinder and set the crank to TDC, but still could no marks on the side of the teeth. I see that there are two holes covered by the joined rubber plug, that why I was wondering if the marks are actually on the teeth, or should I be looking through the smaller hole to find them.

Marks on the flywheel? Did I miss something?

On most of those big Caddy flywheels...the timing mark is a simple dimple,or set of dimples below the teeth ring, usually a succession of 1 to 3 dots. Sometimes only 1,sometimes a set of three. On others I have seen,a series of drilled holes will negate where your timing marks are....hope this helps.

Damn...I went and said it too!..."Flywheel" Where the Hell is my brain tonight? LOL!!!

Got the new timing set on,tapped the crank gear on very carefully. Now, what is the torque for the cam gear bolts? They're so short, not sure what the spec would be
