  • Glass, glass, glass...

Just pinging the board again for what I need. And what I need is a windshield that will fit a 68 Caddy superior. I've been told that anything from a 65 on through to a 70 would fit. Is that true?

If anybody knows anything about where to find one, or has a connection/contact for one. I would be forever greatfull!

Just passing info along that was passed to me.

Hopefully I'll be legally on the road next weekend. It's taken me almost a year to get this far.

hey musikill , I went to M/S glass in beaverton oregon by the fred myer store, I bought a windshield there for my hearse, I told him that I have other hearse club members that would like another back up windshield and so he gave me a long list of the part numbers.... he said the 1968 part # was DW661 30X68 .. there phone number is 503-227-6666 Matt Rhodes is the manager's name...he also said that if he can't get it call PILKINGTON CLASSICS 1800-848-1351.. he said that after places close they take all the windshields from there stock and store them in 1 location. he said they are the BIGGEST SUPPLIER OF WINDSHILDS ANY PLACE so try that

Make sure he verifies it's for a hearse/ambulance. I'm pretty sure that's the dimensions the local glass company gave me for being the non-commercial glass.

Just cruisin' old threads about windshields. Yesterday I had an auto glass company bring w/s # DW661GBN for my '66 Caddie S&S and it didn't fit. Was only 25" high, even though I was told on the phone it was 30" by 68". Anyway, the exposed glass on the cracked w/s is 26". Thirty seems too tall.

Well, then I was told yes, they can get a w/s that would fit...but it would cost $818 plus $60 labor plus an extra $50 to drive out of their normal service area. I really don't want to spend that much!

I never dreamed replacing a w/s would be such a pain in the rear.

NOTE: When measuring the windshield to get the correct one--the glass installers need the "Block Size" ...which is the center measure to center measure top to bottom and then again side to side (thus the 30" x 68" size in the post above). I measured the distance of exposed glass from trim to trim and added 1/2" to the size (they figure that approx. 1/4 " of glass is protected by the trim) and it gave me the correct size windshield.
                  Hope this helps.

Good advice on measuring glass. I'd done that several times to make sure I had it right. I am short, so hadda crawl all over the hood! Shoulda coated my clothes with some car wax!

I wonder if insurance would cover something that was an old window crack repair that cracked again. I thought my car had suffered a rock hit while it was towed on a trailer, but the glass tech said he saw a couple of small holes where it had already been repaired once. Guess it got jolted too much on the ride home.

At any rate, I sure wish a w/s didn't cost around $1000. If I ever decide to cough up that much, I will be paranoid to drive on the highways!

My insurance covered mine, no problem at all. They didn't care anything about the damage, they said "it had to be safe to drive", that's all. It cost them over $1200, and had to come from Mexico, (this was a few years ago, when there wasn't any available in the US.)

And yes, I'm still paranoid to drive on the freeway, lol.

Isn't the W/S in a '68 stock caddy? Just what I was told, not sure myself, but just because it is a hearse or a combo doesn't mean it is all custom. I have gotten parts for my "68 Superior combo by just asking for '68 caddy, and see if they are right.. the minute you say hearse it seems the price for the exact same part goes up....

Nope, the Hearse/Ambiance windshield, is taller than the normal car (including the limos)
