  • Your First Moment of Love (for hearses)

Hey! Was just wondering. When was the very first moment any of you actually realized that a hearse was the car you wanted? Or at least when did you first start liking them?

it was an impulse buy for me. i started entertaining the idea when my daily driver broke down, and found out a good friend of mine owned hearses before

I've loved Caddy's & am a big fan of Halloween. So I figured I could combined them & bought a hearse. Since then I've had a total of 3 & can't see going back to being a hearseless owner.

For me it was years ago, back when playstation 1 was still new. I was over my cousins' house playing some game on it where you can pic a car to drive (forget the name of the game tho), and I remember as soon as I saw the hearse, I instantly chose it. After that, I started really liking them. But it's only recently that I've decided that I'm actually going to get one for real someday!

I have wanted one since I was 9 or 10. I can't remember why though. I might have seen one in a movie or something. Or maybe on the street.

With me it was when I was about 12 or 13, back in 1968. We had stopped at a gas station and my dad was filling the family car when at the island next to us pulled up a group of hippies driving a 1949 Packard Lasalle, all gold with chocolate brown velvet interior.....sweet!! This was the time that everyone was driving a van of some sort, and I thought that a hearse would be a cool variation of the van.... Not to mention at the time my bedroom was a old storage room in the basment of my parents house and I slept in a coffin...and was totally into horror movies....and of course my favorite holiday is Halloween. A few years later some family members and myself started a band and we purchased Elvira to haul our equipment, the rest is history......lol

At first, It really wasn't the "Hearse" thing that caught my eye... just the fact it was 'different'. And when I was told "your nuts" by people for liking a hearse, then I HAD to have one.
At 15 (being a big Munsters and Addams Family freak), I build my own Coffin bed - complete with my name engraved in the lid.
When I was 16 I had a chance to get a '40s Hearse & Limo set (parts from both would fix one). It looked like something right out of "Hogan's Heros"... big bullet headlights on the fenders and was as big as a house for $300, but Dad wouldn't lend me the money (same thing with a '67 GTO a year later - "it needs paint" - Christ, it was just rebuilt from the ground up and was all primer for $700)
At about 23, I found another, late 50's I think - just remember it had BIG fins!!! But had just got my own place and had to pass.
Then life came along... house, wife, kids, divorce, new wife, etc.. While the dream of a Hearse was still alive, the finances & time wasn't.
In April, 07 I turned 50 - by May, 07 I had my Hearse, Damn it!!!!

My fascination for the cars started at a funeral when I was about eight or nine. My cousins were all talking about their dream cars, and pointing out which cars passing on the street or parked in the lot they would like to own. I pointed at the coach, and they laughed telling me you couldn't possibly have such a thing.

Fast forward... I was sixteen and my buddy Jean-Paul was all excited about his first job, delivering pizzas. He called me the next day angry and sad. He had been fired when they discovered he drove a hearse. I thought it was funny as hell, and wished that car was mine.

Fast forward again... I was twenty-eight, single, and had just bought my first house. I started looking at the possibility of getting a hearse, and decided I like the older ones. Thought about it, and talked myself out of it because I couldn't justify a vehicle for recreational purposes, and I'm not a good enough mechanic to drive one full-time.

Ease forward... One night at the Cherry Pitt, Zack and I get to talking about cars, engines, transmissions, whatnot, and I realize I might know a bit more than I give myself credit for... Maybe I could really do this...

Ease forward... I am in attendance for Destructacon. It had started to rain, so I went to roll up the windows on Zack's Savannah. I lean over to get the passenger side window, and the driver's door closed behind me. I was struck by the size, the silence, the scent... At that moment I was just so in love with that car. I have no idea how long I sat there, listening to the rain on the roof, and watching it trace down the windshield, but that was it. I was hooked.

So, it's August of 2007, I am thirty-two and have just traded cash for the title of a 1975 Superior 3-way. It doesn't run, and the interior is trashed, and I could care less, because she's mine. Her name is Niobe, and I'm going to make her live again.

It's April of 2008; I am thirty-three. Niobe now runs, and has been sold back to one of her prior owners, and Helen now graces the garage. She is not a daily driver, because I can't afford the gas, but she will be driven a lot this summer. We have plans for camping trips and picnics, and just cruising for the joy of it. So far, my only regret is that I waited this long.

It was about 12 years ago when this tatoo artist brough his car to have the windows tinted. I really never thought much about owning a hearse until then. I couldn't get over how big that car was. It was so unusual it really struck me as cool. Once in a while I would check out the "Autotrader" magazine since Ebay wasn't very big at the time. One day I opened up a new Autotrader and there was that tatoo guy's hearse for sale. I bought it that day.

I was about 11 or 12 when I saw a picture of a 1959 Cadi Hearse when I absolutely became in love with them. Spent the next 18 years coming up with different ideas for it. Now I got the cadi right and the hearse right but not quite the right year but hey had to start somewhere right?

I think the video game you played might be " TWISTED METAL BLACK " it has a hearse that you drive in it ,with all special weapons all over it. it unlocks better weapons as you unlock the story of a goth girl going bad............................... I have wanted a coach since the 7th grade. I told myself I shall have one. I then got a job as a "First Call" person at a funeral home where I picked up the deceased at coroners office , care homes etc... then did the hearse driver for the funeral procession and was hooked ever since.

I was watching a vampire parody where a hearse was parked in front of a hotel. The two guys who were hunting him said, "That's got to be him, or a rock group." I thought that driving a hearse would be cool, but didn't realize that the average person could get one.

Then I did the casket races in Dallas and met some cool people. Alex pointed out a hearse project for sale on Ebay in Phoenix, and I pulled it down to Tucson on a tow bar and put it back into service.

If I had it to do over again, I would buy a nicer one, but at least I've had the experience of taking one completely apart now. I also don't feel guilty about tearing into it to modify it. I like lots of electrical power and doo-dads.

My mom said when I was a young kid, I saw a hearse somewhere and I told her "I want one of those when I grow up."
When I was in High school me and one of my best friends used to talk about getting one and hot rodding it and turning it into a limo.
I had a new car that had gotten totaled. So I was looking for a new car. I had started seeing a few hearses in front of tattoo parlors and here and there. Then one day me, my wife at the time and her grandmother was riding thru Cobb county. We rode by Houston Brothers. I made her grandmother turn around and go back. It was about a month later I owned Ethyl and have been totally in love with her since.
