I know this topic is probably overspoken and extremely frustrating for most everyone on here. Been reading rumors that some people are considering getting rid of their pride and joys due to the high gas prices. I can completely understand and can definetely relate when my road trips lately have been costing me in excess of 500 bucks to get to the jobsites. But please I'm beggin all of you don't give in ,don't sell your cars! We all bought these cars for the looks, the love and of course the shock factor. Don't give in if at all humanly possible. I've sold playtoys in the past to make ends meet and I have hated myself everyday for it. The love of these cars has brought us all together in this little forum/second home. This is just my plea to every hearse owner/potential hearse owner. Keep what you got cuz there's no tellin if you'll be able to find a replacement when things calm down again.

CONGRESS RECENTLY VOTED TO MAKE IT ILLEGAL TO DEVELOP U.S. OIL SHALE RESOURCES
With oil prices at an all-time high, Americans are facing escalating gas, diesel, and aircraft fuel increases. Oil prices are projected to increase further.
Congress, however, has made it illegal to develop vast domestic oil resources in large parts of the United States.
The most startling Congressional prohibition on domestic oil production concerns the recently enacted ban on the development of oil shale resources in parts of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming in the Green River Formation. According to a Rand Study estimate, this reserve contains over one trillion barrels of oil, with 800 billion barrels fully recoverable, or three times the current oil reserves as Saudi Arabia:
The largest known oil shale deposits in the world are in the Green River Formation, which covers portions of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. Estimates of the oil resource in place within the Green River Formation range from 1.5 to 1.8 trillion barrels. Not all resources in place are recoverable. For potentially recoverable oil shale resources, we roughly derive an upper bound of 1.1 trillion barrels of oil and a lower bound of about 500 billion barrels. For policy planning purposes, it is enough to know that any amount in this range is very high. For example, the midpoint in our estimate range, 800 billion barrels, is more than triple the proven oil reserves of Saudi Arabia. Present U.S. demand for petroleum products is about 20 million barrels per day. If oil shale could be used to meet a quarter of that demand, 800 billion barrels of recoverable resources would last for more than 400 years.

Not that I wouldn't love to hold onto every coach we own and the Ambulance too, but things are not supposed to calm down, someone needs to start working on an energy efficient coach I guess, or we all need to start building horse drawns. There are cars that we will fight for and cars that just aren't worth the fight...My 88 is a keeper right now, and Christine is a keeper project that may eventually go down the road too, but everything else is getting dumped in favor of some small body hearse- thing that we can afford to drive!

No amount of high gas prices will make me get rid of my hearse, it will just make me drive it a little less.
Sad part is we could have been drilling our own oil years ago and have all the cheap gas we want.
It is funny though how some people will go buy an over priced cup of Starbucks coffee then complain about high gas prices.

I own 3, and need to sell one! BUT, not for the reson you might be thinking... Owning more than 2 hearses (at least in my situation) is just plain crazy... Besides, the city is breathing down my neck about "open storage"... Does it seem strange to sell a working hearse and keep a dead one?

No amount of "GAS" money could take Elvira away from me. I have owned her for thirty years and if she just has to sit and be looked at instead of being driven so be it. I have built her a garage all her own and if I can't afford to drive her she has a place to stay, out of the eliments until things change......We survived the gas crunch of the seventies and we will overcome the gas crissis of the times......

Morticia isn't going anywhere ever. At the current rate, just starting her up takes $5 out of my wallet, but she isn't going anywhere. I don't drive her much (if any really), but she's in a garage now and is out of the elements - I have plans for the future to go a bunch more extreme since she won't have to sit outside and rot away - so if I don't drive her, no big deal.
I sold my cobra because I was bored with it, not because of gas prices. I bought the corolla because of gas prices and working down town (and man, I love that decision).
My big point of contention is for people to understand the reasoning for the gas prices, and for people not to collapse into a panic and give more of a nod towards socialism (a vote for a democrat is really saying that you want a socialist state, seriously) or communism (hooray for unions right?) and give away their freedom by letting our government tell companies how much profit they can make or prop up any more of the 10 planks of communism (like property taxes, graduated income taxes, right of inheritance, etc...). Like Ben Franklin said 'those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety' (ala patriot act).
Oil is through the roof because of oil speculators, not supply, not demand, because of fucking index speculation - the quantity of liquid capital in the oil and commodity exchange has gone up over 27.7 times!!! Tell me that if you dumped that kind of money into ANY company that the value per share of their stock wouldn't be artificially inflated. It's just like the hearse market, these damned things are cheap as shit right now (always has been because there is no real resell market), but if it was THE thing to have, and all the sudden everyone and their momma wanted one, then the value would go through the roof at an unnatural pace, which is the supply and demand side of it, but if the desire dropped and the supply was the same, but 27.7 times more people were buying hearses and selling them for high amounts, then the value would stay super inflated (like a '55 chevy is worth more than a '55 Buick for practical purposes of cost new versus depreciated value over 53 years, accounting for the loss of value in the dollar) - it's the damned market has made the value of them go through the roof and sustain.
I'm off my soap box now.

Good greif I couldn't even run the 88 at those kinds of prices. I generally keep an eye on the crazies at PeakOil.com's messageboards it's fun to listen to them speculate about when oil will run out, how we should adapt, ect...but the reality is that while I wait to see what will really happen, the 88 isn't going anywhere
