  • O.k...Interesting senario...

and one that is pissing me off to no end. I have never, NEVER in my life come across a distributor that will not rotate to adjust the timing. So.......I have this 82 buick hearse in my driveway. It comes in REEKING of fuel fumes, and running like absolute shit. So, after alot of carb mixture screw adjustment, and a slight idle adjustment, it runs 100% better than it did, and no longer reeks of unburned fuel. But 100% better is not enough. The timing is soooo far retarded, that it shuts off randomly, idles irratic as hell, and you have to pump the gas pedal 30 times to start it.
So I go to adjust the timing.........

The fucking distributor WILL NOT MOVE. I pulled the clamp and bolt completely out and put half a can of PB blaster, a wrench on the square part of the housing, and put 220 lbs of ass on it and it wouldn't move a single little smidge. It's locked solid. Now, the engine was at operating temp when i tried to move it, and its a no go. I am afraid if i give it anymore " persuasion" I'm going to snap the bitch. Anyone ever run into this? I am seriously looking at the unfortunate possibility of just giving it all the ass available, and if it breaks, then just chisel out the rest of it and replace it with another unit.

I really don't get it. Thoughts?

o.k....after some research this is apparently common on these engines, but still i dont know a good, non-semi destructive way to do this. most of the things i read said " yeah, we busted it , then drove a pry bar between the block and the lip of the dist shaft and pried it out"......I don't wanna have to do this if I don't have to......

I'd try a wrench on the square and a rubber mallet to "shock" it loose without twisting it's head off... Sorry, that's all I've got...

Tried that. Even tried using a medium sized short handle sledge. Still nothing

Eat a big dinner and try again.

Actually, have you tried some big channel locks or visegrips...just clamp down and twist left to right?

I think the distributor shaft is aluminium and the block iron. When they corrode they form a pretty good bond. You have to get some liquid wrench and soak it for a couple of days first. Once it get's down in there it will start to break down that crap. Patience is a virtue...go work on that jap bike while you wait!

I didnt get the bike. Imma stick with my Plymouth for awhile.

I used a huge wrench fit to the square part of the shaft. I tried going everywhich way with it. It seriously will not move.

take it to diner, and get it some flowers, that might loosen the goose.... if still no luck, threaten to sell it to a kid who will make a REALLY BAD ecto clone out of it. that will force the shit loose. i guarantee it!

Great. I'm dealing with one of THESE cars......I went out there this morning and twisted it by hand. Fucker.

Ok. set timing( which was WAY off) metered out carb (which was WAAAAYYYY off) and finally isolated the running issue down to a nasty little misfire. I took it out for a sec today, that little bastard has some power to it for being a 307. And once I get that misfire out and the busted EGR valve handled it's going to run smooth and quiet as hell. Trans seems to shift good, but the way the kickdown cable was mounted pulled it out too far, so it was acting like it was slipping,( taking to long to go from one gear to the other) and there is either a u joint or the center bearing is going out, at low speed it vibrates like hell, but smoothens out with speed. It starts off smooth....about 10-15 mph it starts to jump around, then it stops as speed progresses. I dunno. I haven't crawled under it yet.

                    Heh. Gotta love gremlins.

Alright. Whomever did the last tune up on this car do me a favor. Don't do it again. Please. Seriously.

The tab on the top of the rotor...destroyed.

The center contact in the cap. destroyed.

The ignition coil. Has caught on fire do to a severly inproper installation. How the car even ran to begin with baffles my mind.

The reason for this chain reaction is this....

In the cap. Under the coil. Is a contact and a big rubber insulator. Well, the correct installation goes......contact, insullator, coil.

what I found was insullatator, contact, coil. the contact wasn't even breeching the inside of the cap, where it is supposed to make contact with the tab on the rotor. there was at least a 1/4 inch gap there, and the tab on the rotor had been spinning against the plastic on the cap.

Ugh. I'm going to the parts store......

I hate autozone. Even moreso, I hate mexicans in autozone. I stand there in line, for like, 15 minutes, my turn comes up, and this damned little beady eyed motherfucker walks around me up to the counter. Now, the guy behind the counter, looks at me like....oh shit.......( he knows me pretty well), and I say " um excuse me"...the little fucker turns around and just smiles at me. Oh hell no. I drop the item i had in my hand on the floor, and just in the time it took me to ball up my fist and get ready to drop that douchebag, old james comes around the counter in between us and goes" hey let me go see that Plymouth of yours, I hadn't seen it yet".....as we walk outside he goes " damn son, i was afraid I wasn't gonna be fast enough"....lmao.

Autozone parts are crap. I got a new coil for her coach......install it......and then spend 30 minutes wondering why the damn car wont run at all. I drop the old coil back in, and it runs....like shit, but runs. I take the coil back....and go to fucking NAPA. The car ran perfect until the power steering belt broke and sent it flying into my moms rose garden. Only way I found the fucker was by the smoke comming off of it.

Got the correct adapter piece for the trans kickdown cable for the edlebrock carb. took me 15 minutes to get that fucking electrical connector off the end of the cable............

But yes. don't even have to pump the gas to start it anymore. Now to the EGR valve and whatever it is in the driveshaft.

I am fond of gremlins. Keeps me busy.

Yeah I avoid them like the plague. I think the worst part about Autozone is their counter clowns.

Apparently they've been trained that if a vehicle, part, or whatever, if it doesn't come up in their computer then it doesn't exist! Never mind the fact that the vehicle is parked out front or I'm holding the old part in my hand.
