Temecula Code enforcement it seems takes an artistic aproach toward the law. They may not know the law, but they know what they like.

Isn't that how most cities operate? They count on your ignorance of the law to push you around.

God, some of what you guys have been through, just for the love of something a little different. I find myself to be very lucky, I live in a neighborhood made up mostly of retires. My neighbors, front and sides are all in their sixties. And all of them love my coach. The one across the street from me got excited about the fact that it can tow his work trailer. So now I have an open offer to use his trailer whenever I need it. (as long as he gets to take pics.) And to go back into the thread a bit, banning coaches from fund raisers just because the subject of "death" is sensitive is the dumbest shit I've ever heard of. I can just about guarantee that those doing the banning suffered from none of the disease or ills that they were trying to run the event for. It's been my experience that people with ailments or terminal illness are usually the first to make fun of/talk about their situation. In a sense they become the ultimate realists. When my Mother found out that I had bought a hearse the first thing she said was “So when I die you’re gonna transport me in it right?” “Uh…yeah Mom, sure.” “Good, that’ll save us a nice chunk a change.” (My Mother being a 17 year, two time breast cancer survivor.) Anyway, now that I’ve got my windshield, I can’t wait to start hitting up the car shows. Let the snobs and over spending blowhards have their aneurisms and coronaries. Watching them pop their tops while I have fun showing off my baby will only sweeten my day.

Due to problems the City of Temecula was giving me over my hearse collection, we had decided to build a small hearse museum in the empty land that was behind the historic residence which we used for our antique shop. Once we told the Chief Planner of our plans to find out what we would need to build this, that's when the fun really began. Because code enforcement is under the jurisdiction of City Planning, they had code enforcement go after any coach they suspected wasn't running, and order it's removal. I was even ordered to remove coaches from repair facilities, where they were awaiting mechanical work. In one case, the code enforcement officer demanded I tell them where I was storing the vehicle, to find out if it could be started. It was when I was about to be ordered to make my 1912 White run, or remove it from Temecula, that I dicovered reading the Temecula Municpal code that innoperable vehicles could be stored at a licensed business that I was finally able to shove this law up their rectal orafice, and make them back off. i haven't been to a show yet but my landlord hates it. had the city after me for city ordinaces, i called the city no problen just get it off jackstands. can't wait for a big show at our state fair. will compete against my brother in laws firetruck, no one else in his division but every year he gets third. maybe this year he'll get second and i'll get third

I just read this whole thread and it just drives home that people really need to get over themselves.

My first drive in my coach, my girlfriend is a dispatcher for the local sheriff, I had to run up and drop some tools off for them to use working on the office. I heard later that one of the deputies got stopped and asked if there was a death at the jail cuz they saw a hearse parked out front

I have 2 responses I use when questioned...

"That's morbid!" = "No, it's a car"
"Why blah blah blah hearse death blah blah" = "Ok, think of it as a Cadillac Stationwagon"

I'm figuring I'll end up catching a lot of shit since I drive a newer coach and it looks like its still a working car.
She doesn't have the 'classic cool' that the older rides have to help offset some of the 'hearse shock' (but don't tell HER that!)

here's a side story about car show snobbery...
I used to have a heavily modded Honda S2000. If you don't know what they are, its a 2 seater roadster that was built basically as street legal club racer. NOT a typical honda. Add a turbo, full coilover suspension, etc and with some skill, you can eat porsches for lunch on most tracks.
I would take it to shows and even though the public loved it and everyone drooled and wanted to know what it was, if they could take a picture with it, etc. The only trophies I ever got were fan choice type trophies.
I won so many of those at a local cruise in that they changed it so that only cars older than 1981 were allowed to win trophies.

I dont know if this classifies as Hearse descrimination but when I had to phone around to get someone to repair and rechrome the rear bumper on the 64 we just got ( and shipper damaged ) the guy who owned the repair and chroming business gave me so much shit about owning a hearse he just did himself out of $1500 worth of work. I went elsewhere.

Oh hell yeah, that qualifies.

However some mechanics won't work on it simply because they're superstitious about the car and are actually afraid to touch it, which I would then say is more related to ignorance than discrimination.

Wait, no, I take that back. "I hate you because I'm afraid of you" has been the idea used to opress people for centuries and discrimination IS ignorance. Sorry I just woke up.

that place is pretty impressive, if you're ever in the area. i mean, i'm sure there are a lot more hardcore cemeteries out there. oakland's definitely the best one probably in the state

Ryan that reminds me. I just watched a documentary called "A Cemetery Special" on PBS. One of the ones they showed on the show was right across from a restaurant called "Six Feet Under".

First off if a company doesn't hire me because of what I drive not what I can do, I wouldn't want to work for them anyway, what else are they going to be picky and anal about? Second all ,but that one redneck who flipped me off when he drove by ,responses I've gotten so far on the car have been good. I've had a few dirty looks but actual comments have all been good.

I had a cemetery stop hearses from coming in, I thought that was funny, them being a cemetery & all.

That's pretty awesome when it happens. You should tell him to buy a coach and convert it into an icecream truck. I've always wanted to do that (but obviously do it to an 80's or a model that's really common).

Anyhow I say there should be a list of businesses that don't like hearses for a boycott. I always avoid McDonalds if I can help it now (although around here they really don't seem to care). Tim Hortons gets extra props for their commercial, and Aiwa. Which reminds me I wanted to start a new thread.

I told him there is about 5 other guys in the area with hearses and we sorta have a small group... "Bring 'em all down" he says, Hang out and have FREE Ice Cream".

yeah it really depends on who runs the place. i've heard stories that lots of fast food places generally were not cool with hearse drivers as customers, even.

there are the businesses that *want* hearses there to attract attention. i'm not really sure why mcdonald's has a problem with it. it's not like they're a classy restaurant or anything.

it's all a matter of perception and how they think it will affect their customers, i guess.

Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones - as far as work, I've been known to have some weird cars so when I pulled up in my Hearse the fist time my Boss / supervisor just said "Oh, I knew it was you" along with "THAT is the coolest car you've had so far" (Of course, I wasn't trying to get a job there, been working there for over 30 yrs.)
