If the tranny has a front pump it can be done. My old 66 Impala had starter trouble so we tow started it to get it home. Tow at 30mph in neutral, drop it in drive, and viola! I don't think the th400 has a front pump tho... time to check the books!

Yes, the turbo 400 has a front pump. It sits right behind the torque converter, and bolts into the bellhousing/case.

I can't verify the towstarting tho.

According to my books, it's a rear pump that makes tow starting possible. The rear pump is driven by the tailshaft and spun by the driveshaft while towing, effectively "powering up" the hydraulic system. Now to find my TH400 book...
