  • 84 Superior no charge light

The latest problem is with the no charge light staying lit. I first noticed the no charge light was very dim at night. I checked the belts and found one belt was loose and tightened it a few weeks ago. That seemed to solve the problem.

Tonight we took 2 Hearses and went off, good thing we did. I stopped and heard the blower for the fan still running. I flipped the switch to econ and it stopped. As I got out the car I thought i saw a red light but didn't think much of it. When i got back to the car it wouldn't start. Used the other Hearse to jump off and it started right up. Drove it about 10 miles to get home and then I noticed the crazy problem in the driveway.

With the key off, it has the no charge light on dim and the fan motor is running. If I flip the switch on the AC control to low the light comes on brighter. The car had enough juice to restart. The "no charge" light goes out with the car running. I did a search on the cadillac forum and found a similar problem that pointed to the alternator having 1 diode bad out of 3. I unplugged the alternator and the "no charge" light as well as the blower motor turned off. The car sat for about 1-1/2 hrs before I messed with the alternator and it was still very hot. Someone had posted that "bad diodes in alternator, which allows feedback from the battery through the alternator and back to whatever ground is available" and since the blower motor is the first its usually the one to run.

Tomorrow I'm gonna replace the alt. and see if it solves this crazy problem after doing a quick test. The only thing good is that the other guy replaced the alt and it solved the problem he had. Hopefully thats all it is and this turns out to be another story on this board to help someone else in the future.

I tested the ground from the alt and it was hot, how freaking crazy is that. One diode goes out and causes shit to go out of wack. Installed a new alternator and everything is back to normal.

Sounds like also a ground issue if the closest was the blower motor. All cars should have 2 big grounds from the battery. One to the block and one to the frame. Or frome the block to the frame. One cheesy little ground from the battery to the block does not cut it. Will make all kinds of things happen.

Had this one case of the faster you drove the dimmer the dash lights got. Charged great, started everytime. Turned out some stero guy cut the dash ground saying it was not needed so the dash lights were grounding through the speedo cable. So at rest the ground was ok. but the faster the iner cable spun while driving the crappier the ground path was.

Factory ground to block is still there, its in the way actually to get the rear bolt off the alt. Why it back feeds thru the ac is beyond me. I did find a few others with the same problem on the cadillac forum. Ran car again a little while ago. The new alt seems to have solved the problem.

Is there also a 4ga or bigger from the neg to the chassis or from the block to the chassis usually at the rear of the manifold to the firewall
